Biking to work... for beginners

My formula:
Hybrid bike, carbon fork
35mm puncture proof tyres
2/3 lights, I use rechargeable ones of ebay for £5 or so for the really bright LED ones
small pack of spares (tube/chain link etc)
Mud guards (use full guards I used the MTB style and got covered so then changed over)
Decent waterproof jacket - mine is hi-vis
baggy shorts with padded liner
Winter gloves
Trainers
Decent waterproof bag.
I have also found that with careful folding and packing I can take shirts in my bag and they are not really creased when I get to work.
as someone else has said always have spare sock/boxers etc - I leave a paid of shoes at work always so don't have to lumber them around.
