To me Peloton is a crazy amount of money for a static bike, and by all accounts its nothing more than a basic spin bike with a posh iPad attached to it!

The Peloton monthly cost is Crazy, when compare to the likes of Zwift/Sufferfest/Xert/Rouvy/Training Peaks (about £6-13)
For the upfront cost you could get a good entry level Adventure/Endurance bike, and a Good turbo Trainer

https://www.boardmanbikes.com/gb_en/products/2332-... - £1000
https://uk.wahoofitness.com/devices/bike-trainers/... - £699

You now have a decent enough bike, a trainer for the winter
and a saving of around £30 a month!

Zwift is a 'Game' where you can race and do a training programs
Rouvy Uses an Augmented reality
The others are full on training apps
To be fair MCM87 makes loads of valid points as to why they are so successful and ultimately it’s not designed for cyclists. They’re not trying to tempt people away from road cycling. The majority of peloton users have no desire to ride outside. Peloton are trying to tempt people away from gyms. My question has always been will that strategy work post covid when no one can see you “peloton” (is it a verb yet?!) I find the whole thing fascinating and scoffed at the outset that it couldn’t possibly work but now I’m something of an admirer I even if I’d never buy one.

It’s a community and when your friends are already in it, FOMO means others want to join in. It’s like the Range Rover Evoque/Q3/SUV...

Everyone knows how much they cost, so like gym membership, it’s a statement of wealth. I’m not saying people here choose them for that reason but some will. Everyone knows peloton costs about £2k to buy, very few could tell you how much a similar value bike cost just by looking at it.

It can be used by a number of people with minor adjustments (look at the difference in saddle/bar drop between your typical road bike and a peloton bike) . Mrspablo would never get comfy enough on my road bike to ride it on the trainer.

It’s a spin class not cycling

If there is no race ala zwift, you can’t lose

It’s not oily, it’s not noisy

They're very much a lifestyle accessory as that's the only real thing you get with a Peleton bike over just using the app with a proper spinning bike. The bike+ does look like an improvement but doesn't appear to offer anything extra if you only care about spinning classes, and is lacking connectivity for use with other platforms.

Had a peloton bike + since December last year and I am enjoying it. I find it strangely addictive and I like how quick and easy it is to just jump on(I used to going running). It is definitely expensive overall though(many cheaper alternatives from what I read on here), however I'm finding myself really wanting the Peloton treadmill as well now!

My lass announced last September that she had purchased one as she had canned the idea of spin classes at the gym. So late Sept this bike that goes nowhere rocked up.
I was extremely cynical that it was the proverbial expensive clothes hanger and would be looking to up gumtree after Xmas.

I'm an avid road/off road cyclist after rediscovering my passion when I retired from playing rugby 5 years ago so to me it was an American inspired gimmick that had made its way over the pond and she had bought into the hype.

However I believe in don't knock it till you try it so had a look round the classes/instructors line up ( Which is extremely varied ) and tried a few things out as the nights drew in.

Yes there was the obligatory 30 min leg crushing sessions with 20 something fitness fanatics utilising the clichés etc...but then I checked out powerzone training....so fast forward to March and I now have 160 various powerzone rides under my belt and tbh I can see and feel the difference...acid test is when I get my old arse back out on the road in the next couple of weeks and see what improvements/gains I've made.

Its not for everyone but its certainly not just a spin bike but you still need to have the motivation of swinging your leg over, clipping in and riding.

^^ agree with both above.

I bought one for the wife for lockdown and ended up selling my turbo to a mate on the back of it (mostly space related).

It gets a LOT of use - I use it 3-4x a week and the wife probably 4-5x.

It isn't for everyone and probably not for hardcore cyclists but its very good at what it does. Interface is super slick and it just works every time.

Its very easy to get on and do a 30 or 45min class and come out the other side feeling like you've given everything.

Sometimes the classes can get a bit too much, so I do a free-ride and just watch TV whilst pedaling and that also works well.

No getting away from it - it is expensive but so were the spin classes at 25gbp a pop that the wife was doing pre-C19.

Overall, I'm thoroughly happy we got one. Definitely don't knock it until you've tried it.

Got our tread a month ago. Really enjoying it, the running/full body workout classes are a good way to mix it up too, rather than just straight forward running at your own pace.

How much? That price makes no sense at all. When able I'd do some spinning classes as part of my Leeds council gym membership which is less than £25 a month.

Got my wife back on her real bike last weekend and enjoyed it, so despite my reservations about on going costs we now have one coming....

Picked the series 1 up right at the beginning of lockdown 2020. Currently on a 54 week streak! (Same applies to the wife) we also use some other classes on the app.
Quite frankly it’s one of the best things I’ve purchased in years, the whole experience on the bike, in the classes, and racing on the leaderboards is great. It’s not cheap at £39 a month, but when you look at how easily you get through £39 a month on takeaway coffees, and booze (maybe that’s just me) I think it’s good value when you consider that’s two people doing 30+ spin classes between us a month

Our Peloton arrived Monday afternoon, since than I've done 5 rides with 2 of them 'live classes'. It was bought to help my wife do some exercise but I was fully ready to take up Peloton up on their '30 day returns' policy.

But I'm actually using it more than my wife!!! With the horrible weather, my commuter eBike been fixed (again), work been very busy, having to do school pick up my time on a real bike over the last few weeks has been virtually zero. So been able to smash out a Zone 4 focused work out, in one of the 'live' sessions at 10pm last night was great.

I finished a lowly 371 position, pushing out 470kj, the top guys/girls were pushing out nearly triple the amount of work in the same time period, so there are some properly fit people using these things!!

Been able to 'schedule' your work outs weeks in advance is also great, for days when am WTF I can see how a 20 minute HIT session can easily fit into a day of Zoom/Teams sessions, which we all know can be soul destroying. Because its all integrated you can literally go from sitting at a desk typing to been on the bike within in 60 seconds (or how ever long it takes you to put on the shoes and change in to suitable cloths - the fact no one can see what you are wearing on your legs in Zoom helps smile).

I thought about Zwift, and Wattbikes, but probably the biggest things with Peloton is that SWMBO also uses it and loves it. So instead of been tucked away in a dark corner of the house/garage its positioned in the main corridor between the kitchen and living room. It really is almost silent in usage, even when pushing out 500watts unlike Wattbikes I've used before that sound like washing machines. I've been doing rides at 6am when everyone else in the house is asleep, and at night without waking up my 5 year old whos room is above the bike.

Overall very impressed with Peloton, £39/month is ALOT to pay, but if it keeps me motivated to stay fit or gets me fitter great. I wouldn't be taking up Peloton on their 30 day money back offer smile

Is that how its ranked then? KJ done?

Doing 3 times what you did would be a figure I'd think was highly dubious from anyone using a Peloton!

My mate works for the company, and posts his rides to Strava somehow, I guess it's all integrated. Apparently there were nearly 64,000 people on the class he did last night, which is astonishing. If they're all on £2k spin bikes and paying £39 a month, I can really see the business plan!

KJs done, unless someone is 'hacking' their bike (whats the point??) there are plenty of people doing 300watts+ on these things. For the FTP ride I did there was 18,839 people better smile.

I'd imagine they're just not calibrated properly or out of sync tbf, some wattbikes in gyms spit out hilarious numbers. That would be over 400w, which is highly unlikely from anyone using something like a peloton bike.

My boss got upset when I referred to his road cycling indoor races as soon bike sessions.

What's the difference?

Your static, indoors looking at a screen.

Why not actually ride a bike outside?

6 rides in 6 days, 3 of them 'live', 1hr spend sat on a stationary bike in the middle of the day at the weekend - not a chance I would have done that before.

I am officially hooked.

Finished my first Peloton powerzone program, the 20 minute FTP test said my FTP has gone up from 180watts to around 210watts.

The real proof ofcourse in on the road, did my usual 18 mile loop today with around 1,200ft of climbing, and managed to improve my average speed by 1mph compared to when we first got the Peloton, and now quicker than at the end of last year when I was doing ALOT more real road cycling. This was only my 4th ride on the road bike this summer.

Speed on the flats seems to have really improved but climbing is still killing me, and still not at my PBs from last year.

So I've just put together the 'program' for the next 2-3 weeks on the Peloton, essentially just climbs with some music stuff in between and will than see how I get on in the real world. The £39/month ongoing cost subscription cost is nearly forgotten!.......Though as long as the weather stays nice, I'll try to get out more on the road bike. Nothing still beats smashing up the climbs on a real bike on empty roads on a Sunday morning smile.
