I'm always gobsmacked by how companies mess salespeople, where motivation is everything, around.

In my last biggish company job, HR got involved in the bonus scheme which had previously been done by divisional managers. It became stuipdly complicated and unrewarding even if you were successful. So no-one did any work - people went through the motions, and business ticked over, but I literally had no idea what some people did all day.

Few years back I worked for a company that must have had the worst shop floor mentality ever.

The management absolutely hated the shop floor staff despite the fact they were the face of the company. No bonus, late overtime pay, no pay rise.

They'd come down from head office and take somebody into a room, 3 on 1, and just berate the ste out of them if they perceived he or she had done wrong / wasn't working enough. This just manifested in a complete them and us scenario.

They suffered in the end as all the good initially excellent staff stopped giving a crap and left. This left them with a staff that consisted of the constant sickness, late arrivals and generally bit daft as they would never leave as they were incapable of finding work elsewhere.

There is nothing worse than a them and us workforce and I detest a shop floor workforce in good companies. I could understand it in the company I worked for but I've worked for superb companies before where people tried to be negative all the time and simply didn't realise how good they had it and how bad some companies out there are.
