had a few probs with the bank on friday getting the chaps over but it all went through ok on monday and I am a happy bunny.

before the CSL I had a 996 carrera 2 with the GT3 kit, sports chassis, suspension and exhaust etc.

Picked up the CSL last night and drove into work this morning…I have not stopped grinning since to be honest and was having CSL type dreams as well.

Once I got my hands on it it was just sublime to drive, superb balance in the chassis as well as amazing pull and braking.

I dread to think what they must be like on cups in the dry but as it was a bit damp then I preferred to be on the pilot sports to be honest!

Initial impressions and comparing to the 911 are:

- lighter, slightly vaguer steering but still very responsive to inputs and so much better than std M3s

- quicker than the 911 and some; pulls like a GT3 and the speedo just keeps on going!

- Plenty of grip from the rear but it is never going to match the 911 with the punch and traction out of corners

- You can have a lot more fun mid corner and balance the car on throttle without the worry of the arse at 45 degrees and not recoverable

- the noise is just addictive and you just find yourself driving everywhere with the sport button on

- the M diff button makes the thing a little more slippy and allows you a bit more play at the rear end to break away but pull it in

- seats are superb and very supportive

- the interior is Spartan but not bothered and the carbon really sets it off

- getting used to the SMG and have found that S4 to S5 are about right

- car is a real doddle to drive round town in London and even in auto it is pleasant

- quite a firm ride but then what do you expect

- Much less obvious than the 911 so not so much of an occasion which is good in a way when leaving the car somewhere!

- The noise, the noise and the grunt.

Still chuckling now about the whole experience as it really is like being in a big 205 gti but with about 3 x the grunt!

Looking forward to some track days and a ring trip to find out more about the car, behaviour, poise, the limits and to enjoy it even more!!

Smiles all round and defo a lot more fun than the 911 to drive and more rewarding

Your evaluation is very close to what i found when i made the switch with the added bonus of your car being sharper in every area than the regular M3
The only thing that prevented me going to a csl was the smg which isn't for me.
Good buy glad your enjoying it

On Cups in the dry, the car steps up a whole level. It is just mind-boggling in its ability to go around corners at speeds that just don't seem possible.

Lovely! Going from a C2 to CSL on Saturday so that made very pleasant reading for me.

Mine has jsut had 4 Pilots put on (the previous owner wanted them for the winter, fair enough) so I'll probably be through them by spring ready for the cups!

be excited carrera 2 and get in touch with your thoughts and if you have any more questions...which car are you getting? grey or black?

Rob I see your points and manual would be nice but the SMG2 is much improved and can be sharp. no signs of clutch slip and I always let off a little to help ease the change as a lot of mechanicals working there!!

I did not even know you can bang the SMG lever forward as well as paddles so you feel like a touring car driver! superb!

sounds like a toruing car as well with that NA induction roar!!

cups are pants in our winter weather so I will maybe get some over winter ready for some spring fun!!

Chaps, might not be a good idea to put your email address up - best edit it out and send a personal mail through PH, its more private and doesnt invite the wierdos....

grey ones are more common I will give you that!

I think grey owners say things as above to make up for that shortfall they have.

'oooh look another grey CSL' that's 5 I have seen today! ;-)

actually I reckon it is 'airfix grey' to be honest! what with the company in trouble then you boys should be sorted for touch up paint eh.

in fact I might have some in my folks loft from an old tornado model I never finished.

I do like my metallic black option more I have to say. once you have gone black there is no turning black n all that!

apparently black ones have more torque and less prone to have SMG and RTAB issues.

I have to say it is a superb car and probably the best car I have owned....and that is over the 911! it is just a weapon and the noise just makes me hoot!!

yes There's not much in it speed-wise but black ones are definitely cooler.

congrats on the purchase mate, I came from a Noble to the CSL and I'm just kicking myself I didn't do it sooner. One month into ownership and still very happy.

Hi!!

Have any of you lot got Pilot cup tyres on the car, if yes, how bad are they in the wet?? Im asking as I have just put the deposit on an 04 black CSL with cup's on and worried about driving in bad weather before I have time to change the tyres!

Thanks

yeah, keep convincing yourself getting rid of the 911 was the right thing to do as you vanish into ford mondeo obscurity hehe
