Unfortunately the reality of lost income generally means
Projects and toys get back burnered !
Classic tale of time and no money or money and no time!
The ultimate catch 22!

Were incredibly poorly paid ,
Our drivers are on minimum wage,
Engineering and me, I’m the only body/Paint man
theve got are on 13quid an hour,
I earn less now than 20 years ago,

Definitely time to leave, plus I pay 20% tax on that
As I get zero tax relief, and next month I’ll start paying
National insurance again!!
Ok only 1.25 % but pensioners have never paid this once retirement age has been reached,

I’m 67 soon and still doing a 35 hour week
Doing everything same as I did when I was 40

What really piss’s me off is I get the boss out the pooh almost every week,
I save him thousands on repairs etc and still get treated like dirt!!

Unbelievable really but that’s the modern way
Or so it would seem??

Can't disagree with any of that, especially the bit about getting those above out of the pooh on a regular basis (because they are incompetent) and yet, you get no thanks and no reward, as it seems to be a default of the job description.

If it hadn't of been for Govt rule changes and then Covid, I'd be sitting sweet and only looking at another two years to be able to retire early.......
The double whammy of IR35 and Covid hitting at same time now means I need to hope to be able to still be able to find work for an extra 3 years to get back to where I would have been.

If you are able in principle to retire, maybe do that, have a break, then if you need to, look at something part time and completely different?

I'm 5 years younger than you, I retired 2.5 years ago but since then people have asked me to do bits & pieces here and there so I do that. I would be busy enough on my own stuff, but this gives me a little bit of variety and puts a couple of quid in the bank to take the pressure off the pension! For example I do a little occasional bit of HGV driving, couple of weeks ago a company I know in Sussex were stuck with a truck full of enduro bikes in Portugal, due to an unfortunate personal situation from their side, so I flew out and brought it back. Took 5 days overall, was something a bit different from normal routine, and as I say, paid me a little bonus. I also help out a good mate who has his own business, I just skim a few tasks off the top of what he does, to give him some breathing space.

Something to think about!

It's a shame your job needs such a lot of equipment/premises otherwise you could just take on the nice jobs you fancy.

Sorry to hear about aero's work related troubles, fingers crossed something comes along asap wink

Just got back from the NEC Resto show, there were a few yanks in the auction, the nicest by far condition wise was the early Camaro, a column shift auto but still a good looker...

Bread and butter '64 notchback, very nicely finished all round I thought...

The '65 Fastback GT350 clone looked great from ten feet away and the interior was lovely, but the paint was blistering in places and the masking where the stripes were painted on over the trunk lid was a bit ropey, lots of character though...

Tidy looking '67 C2 Vette caught my eye...

'66 T-Bird needed a bit of love here and there but looked a relative bargain...

A bit later on I made a donation to the Sporting Chairs charity and blagged a twenty five minute ride in this '67 fastback, it has a 351 in it, it sounded epic and was very twitchy on the greasy roads round the NEC...

Bought some more books (oops) and a cheap but shiny Mustang sign for the garage!

Undoubtedly so , but really who can afford
Over a 100K for a car that’s almost impossible to use
Without getting a walking ticket,

Having said that I’d have one in a heartbeat if I had the readies laugh

Need the lottery win badly!

I know it's a bit of a hike for you rr but it's worth a go, it's only across three halls this year but there's plenty to ogle. As wel las the yanks there were a few nice Bentleys, Rollers, Jags etc but strangely not many Astons about.

A nice surprise was early Cobra CSX2038 which Elvis drove in 'Viva Las Vegas', it's a while since I've seen a flat sided one in the flesh and was lovely to see...

Elsewhere in the hall there's a very blinged up replica Cobra on sale for £85k which cemented in my mind that if I ever do buy one it'll be a slab sided job or an FIA with a Le Mans style hardtop, not a multi coloured shin stripey bauble with oversized wheels hehe

Strange how taste chances as you get older, done the wide bodied 427 Cobra thing and if i ever get another one i would like a 289 FIA Hawk

or Superperforance version if i win the lotto, with it's slightly flipped out arches a cross between the 427 and the original Cobra.

I did chase up the one i missed that you linked the video of but that was 7 months old ,the salesman was quite helpful even though the car had been sold

some time ago, said he would pass on my number to the new owner just incase he ever wanted to sell it but heard nothing as yet ,

Thanks for posting the video as you never know were it might lead to.

Probably seen this but have a nosey if you haven't ,Hillbank Motor Corporation channel, ERA 289 FIA ,She will do just needs a Le Mans hard top.clap

I've been a freelance contractor for past 20 years, so its something I've had to get used to, with only a weeks notice either way, you have to mentally acclimatise yourself to potentially chopping and changing jobs on a regular basis. This was hard for me at first as I'd been in a permo role with one company for 23 years prior to that, since leaving school.

As it happens, I was given my notice of contract termination on Monday afternoon this week, and today is my last day, so I'm unemployed after today.

The fallout of the stopping of a lot of the work on HS2 to save money (which it won't) as while I was not working on it, a permo staff guy was, and now has nothing to do, so they've kicked me out the door, to give him the work I was doing. Not the first time its happened to me, ironically, the last time was this same week 3 years ago.....3rd week in March is not my lucky time of year it seems.

good luck and I hope you find another job real quick. Fingers crossed for you

Made decent money. Dodge announced their last hara Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170.
$96,666 and it will run the 1/4 in 8.9 at 151mph. 0-60 in 1.6 seconds all on a prepped track of course.
1025hp on E85 and 950 ft lb of torque.
I have heard anything from $50 to $200 over list being asked

Still seems to be plenty of money about what with GT3's and now the GT3 RS making silly money over list,

The States have so many wealthy buyers being such a large country as can be seen at places like Barrett and Jackson

and all the top auctions houses at Amelia Island ,

Don't suppose we will see any of the last batch Demons here unless you are keeping quiet whistle

That is a stunning car ,have known it for around 25 years and the two owners within that time ,both in Sussex,

Did have around 22,000 genuine miles on the clock then . ,

Even the white paint is original along with the like new blue interior,

A real time warp car , had a 64 white convertlble 98 and as you say very comparable to a Caddy,

Seem to remember the hood catches were the same as my Caddy convertible.

In fact i drove it as a daily for most of the summer months.

IMHO that has been the nicest original 60's yank on sale for a long time - perhaps a little pricey, but who cares with its time warp looks.......I'll even forgive it's two extra doors. Had a tatty '63 Olds 98 in black for a few months back in the 80's.......bought it to get back on the road and for its registration number but unfortunately lost my storage facility and had to sell it. There's a story in how I towed it back from Hertfordshire to East London with a 1.3 Escort on a cup final Saturday.................

Back to writing that book again rosco, there would be enough contributors on this forum along with there mad sometimes

unbielable tales that these type of cars bring with them.

Looking at the the prices some of the chancers out there ask for very ordinary bodged up wrecks these days i don't think

it's that expensive, this is the third time in around thirty years this car has been for sale and has been around the same sort of price

where most cars have appreciated, yes it's got too many doors but it is pillarless and being a 98 will have all the toys ,

Like i said about taste changing although i always appreciated the condition and low mileage of this car it never really

got me excited but looking at those thin pillars and all that glass area there's not a blind spot to be seen .

As they say find another ,i doubt if you would in that sort of price range .

De Cappo, dos’snt that mean Start Again?
Lol

Yep I’ve considered pretty much all options
But packing up completely is far and away the best one !!

I may do the odd job on the drive ,
I’ve got a big’ish compressor in the shed,
my air tools are low consumption as are me guns,

But I think I’ll do the wife’s B’
Then find a late 80’s EX UP, and restore a bike for a change!
I really won’t be able to use it but they are fiddly the restore but also don’t take up to much room!
Shooting was going to be my retirement thing but realistically that’s now toast, huge restrictions,
Ammo prices through the roof,
And no where to do it really so this year will probably be the last.
Ces’t la vie,

I’ll stay at work till my house is totally done,
Almost done bedroom 4 so three more to do
And the toilets and bathrooms ,
Ordered new carpet for all four,
So I figure should be done by September and my 67th!!
Then I’ll walk……

I was wondering if you’d followed up that Hawk FIA, if the stars align you might get a call from the current owner, fingers crossed. If you are going to the NEC today it’ll be interesting the hear what you think of the yanks in the auction area. I was planning on going back there after work but it looks like I won’t finish till 5pm now.

Spotted a very nice yank on the M6 near J6 earlier, it looked like a ‘67 Galaxie two door hard top, looked very tidy in red with a black vinyl roof, probably on its way to the NEC.

PS : sorry for the huge quote but I’m typing this on my work iPad which is utter pants wink

Likewise.....but as you say, I'm not convinced that's now going to be an option.

The dramatic cost rises and/or lack of supply of stuff, and the implications of the lead ban, if it goes through as is, will just kill it.
I'm lucky that I live so close to Bisley, and could realistically drop down to half a dozen shoots a year with the club as affordable, but, realistically I can't see me renewing my ticket in 2026. Not even sure about the SGC either with the huge price hike of 12g.....it costs more for a morning clay busting than a morning on the full-bore range!! And if the ramifications of Plymouth manifest to SGC as could be the case if the politicians get their way, it will kill clay clubs. I know about half of the guys at my clay club say they'll stop if that happens.

I still love classic bikes, but I can't ride them anymore, so couldn't bare to have a lovely Triumph T110 or Beezer Road Rocket sitting in the garage that I couldn't ride.....that would be torture!

Funny how within the space of just a few years, events have conspired to completely change what just 5 years ago, a lot of us thought our retirement enjoyment plan would be.

As you say, c'est la vie.
