Apparently the cause is parametric roll. Excellent informative thread on ybw scuttlebutt about it.

It's a problem becoming more prevalent due to ship design.

The number of lost containers annually, if without this event, is something I find fairly amazing.

Obviously some will fairly be fair harmless, and just sink to the bottom with non-toxic replaceable cargo.
However a lot will contain plastics, foam, or worse pollutants. And I understand a lot remain as floating 'iceburgs' for years.

Nasty to hit one in a small-med size boat.

Looking at the water there was no wind, probably no coincidence.

Since they have a new facility in the port of Amsterdam, I wonder if Feadship will continue to build ships of this size inland. The A'dam facility is just 1 lock away from the North Sea.

Spent a lot of time there onboard the Ocean Greatwhite while it was having a new thruster fitted, then sailed with it out to its first north sea job.
Beautiful place to be.

Just been granted permission to make the dock bigger too, removing 400,000t of rock from the back of the cutting and allowing bigger ships and more importantly, bigger topsides to fit in.
