US Airliner collides with Military Helicopter in Washington
Discussion
Tragic ‘accident’ and circumstances - details and cause of which should quickly become evident.
However, this is being reported as the worst air accident in the U.S. for over a decade.
This is actually a remarkable record when looks at the sheer volume and intensity of flight movements in U.S. airspace - the air is thick with commercial, military, business, GA, and private movements.
Yes, smaller casualty accidents are still an occurrence, but the statistics will still support the safety record of air travel.

Ha - I think we'll wait for the report to come out. This looks to have been a setup for failure way before DEI even became a thing - crazy having a heli route below the flight path and allowing VFR operations in that area at night.
Best you do not fly in London ever then! Part of the London heli routes are directly under approach or departure lanes for Heathrow and its allowed at night under special VFR! And as the other poster shows you can cross Heathrow or even be asked to hold between the 2 runways!normalbloke said:

Trumps poison about DEI is wholly inappropriate, he may well have placed a target on the ATCOs back. I hope the FAA have a plan to protect him.
Trump appears to be trying to foment civil war on his own. Or at least f

As for the FAA...in the new climate I suspect they'll be too busy trying to cover their own arses, and won't care if the ATCO or the Blackhawk PIC gets the blame as long as it's not them.

I wouldn't read too much into that, flying that low will mean it's interpreting from limited data points, I suspect.
In addition to which, helicopters carrying out training exercises regularly make directional changes. And, maintaining a course over water rather than built-up areas is kinder to local residents, especially at night.
It will be interesting to see whether the crew were using NVGs (night vision goggles) and whether this could have affected the clarity of the visual confirmations.

Well, if the ATCO was employed because he was black/brown/yellow/gay/lesbian/BLTQA+ rather than because they were actually the best applicant, Trump's right. We don't know that specifically but overall it's a daft way to hire crucial people. It's not the employee's fault, it's the person/system who hired them because they were hired for the wrong reasons.
It's a bit of a f
