I recorded this from movies4men2 on Freesat. What a great film / documentary with some superb archive footage of a Kestral doing flight trials and landing on the desck of a carrier. It then went through all the variants showing archive footage of them in action and discussing the technical developments - including where the UK govt pulled out of the development project for a number of years.

However, I have a question re the HUD in the later variants. The HUD displays, amongst other things, IR hot spots indicated by little Vs. However, it seems to pick out 5 or 6 all of the time - warm patches of ground heated by the sun, animals, transition points between the ground and water, etc. Is this actually of any use to the pilot if it's always showing false targets?

The V's are called 'thermal cues'. How many that are displayed at one time can be increased/decreased dependant on what the pilot can process. Also they are not for targeting merely to note to pick out the 'hotspots'. The Sniper will do the targetting, well with what the pilot targets. Plus FlIR and DMT with maverick video.
