I got myself a series 3 Landy with all the bits (mostly!) for off roading, the problem is that it's too bloody slow on the motorway, and I've been bitten by the 4x4 bug that much, I've already booked my summer holiday 4x4'ing in the south of France.
So, I'm looking to sell the series 3, and buy a cheap Defender, (diesel) can anyone tell me what cruising speed I'd be getting out of one?

Ta!

I can't help on the cruising speed, but if it's only the getting to and from the South of France that is an issue with the Series 3, have you considered using Motorail?

Drive to the ferry, then stick the Landie on a train once you're on the other side and descend through France overnight.

well out of my engineering depth here, but I'm not sure whether an overdrive unit might help if you don't have one fitted already?

A friend of mine fitted an overdrive to his Lightweight, and it cruises nice now on the motorway. Not as noisey - if that's possible in a lightweight biggrin

Out of curiosity what do you consider too slow? Or are you talking about a lack of acceleration?

Must say it's something that concerns me a little, I'm about to buy a patrol which is relieving my skyline GTR of it's daily driver duties, going from mega power to mega slow I fear may be somewhat frustrating initially.

I don't think you need to be overly worried with the Patrol. I find driving the Shogun to be a very relaxing on road experience because I know that it does its stuff off road, so I don't feel frustration if I'm not having fun on the road in it.

If this Series 3 is anything like the ones I used to drive in the TA though, then you're talking about something which can't get much above 60mph and sounds like an amplified tractor!

I'd love one for off road fun, but like the OP, I wouldn't want to drive any significant distance on the roads to get to that fun!

lol it's the 0-60 of 15 seconds that terrifies me, I'm used to <4 secs biggrin

Still itching to pick it up though smile

Different sort of beastie though, isn't it! You'll be able to waft along serenely, looking down on all the peasants in their euroboxes, knowing that you'll still be able to have more fun at 10mph than most of them would be able to have at 100! laugh

I find when I take the 260 out, it's 80% frustration for 20% fun on Surrey's crowded roads, whereas the Shoggie is 80% relaxation in anticipation of getting to the mud!

Well it's the cruising speed on the motorway, the series 3 is flat out with everything rattling at about 55, I would like 70mph as a cruising speed.

I went from a 400 bhp Caterham to a Unimog.....You'll cope.

tweak a td5 defender a bit and 3 figures become possible!!wink

series Landies are going to give you a reasonable cruising speed of say 50-65mph depending on diesel or petrol.

tdi say 60-75 (noisy after 60 and bad on fuel)

td5 say 60-85 (caveat as above!)

the get a full width intercooler, wind the boost up to 18psi & tweak the fuel pump to match. my old disco 200tdi with that & 32" tyres plus lots of heavy offroad gear could take a standard V8 disco in a drag race...

Instead of selling, how about uprating the engine, 300TDI or V8 perhaps?
