The Verge reporting they are mulling returning to the original app: https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/14/24220421/sonos-...

Reading that just says they don't know what they are doing, this is the second major cockup they have inflicted on themselves and their customers.

I can't be the only one wondering how the product team got it so wrong. To be floundering around thinking of rolling back after so long is equally nuts.

I see Forbes have picked this snafu up now:

I bought a load of Sonos kit a few months ago that is awaiting some house renovations being completed before it gets installed. Really hoping Sonos sort their st out.

Soooo frustrating.

The pp is so clunky and my ipad nor my phone will connect to play Virgin Radio.

only after dicking around it recveals i need to 'reauthorise Sonos Radio' wtf.

its a sonos device.. make it work with sonos product automatically. the system is across our house, otherwise I would be looking to move on.

Whilst there is no doubt the app is an absolute dog with no redeeming features you might get some joy adding Virgin Radio as a service. (You will need an account with them first)

That's how I listen to various radio stations, rather than via Sonos radio,

SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS !!

The bane of all our lives *..

The problem is ... if you are a software developer you can never admit the job is done... because at that point you are out of a job.

Hence there always 'performance tweaks' that nobody needs , ' features' that nobody wants etc etc..

As such we get the sort of sh*tshow we see playing out here.

All that said it's beyond baffling how a company such as Sonos managed to let this calamatiy of an update out into the wild ...

Yeah, it's Sales & Marketing that do all that, not the Developers.

Yup- tried that too - to airplay it across.

Would not engage either.

I have to say since I have turned off my 5gz radio on my router it now works faultlessly 100% of the time.

Was 2.4 and 5 on the same SSID or separate?

If they were on one name could you separate them so still get the benefits of 5G for other devices?

Sorry jimbob, that doesnt mean anything to me. I just googled why doesnt my sonos work and found a post saying if you had a BT home hub go into settings and turn off the 5gz radio and it solves it.

It worked so thats all I can tell you.

Its not affected anything else in the house at all.

Change for the sake of change. It's the same old story of getting new staff in who want to shake things up to make a name for themselves, instead of sticking to the company's core values......which in the case of a WiFi speaker, should be just that. No one wants to create an account just to listen to speakers, or have to suffer a clunky app, just to listen to speakers.

I can't separate 2.4 and 5GHz channels on my Eero, but could with my old BT router. Didn't make much difference in my case though as the Sonos 1s would still drop out and lose stereo phase very easily when 2 of them were paired together.

Maybe some good news. Sonos claim the app should be good soon and are offering extended guarantees by way of an apology.

I've made the decision to sell my set up.

The mobile app is still just not reliable enough. End of an era as I've had their stuff about 20 years.

Such a shame. I'm not buying any more but will continue to use what I have until it's no longer viable (Roam, Move 2, 4 x Play 1).

We're just buying 'tech' for our house renovation and what was going to be Sonos kit will now not be.

I only have a Sonos Beam Gen 2 soundbar for my TV, I haven't touched the app since installing it a couple of years ago. I accept the new app is probably poor, but what do you all actually use the app for? Music?

Music, radio, podcasts, audio books - in 6 rooms.

The windows app works fine

The android app is still toilet, basically unusable in any meaningful way. I can get it to work *eventually* but no one else in the house can be arsed messing around.

I can cash my system in, get some cheap Google speakers for most of the rooms and a decent set up for my office room for a similar amount of cash

I use Roon to control my (now only) two Sonos zones. But that would be an expensive solution unless you already had Roon.

I wouldn't buy Sonos again - they were the gold standard at one point, but the combination of the 'brick' debacle, flakey app and with other solutions emerging have made them less attractive.
