Colour goes by decade:

1970s: Silver
1980s: Black
1990s: Silver
2000s: Black
So that means we should be buying silver now, in anticipation of keeping our kit for a good few years of the next decade?

Damn, I like black. Still, I might find some bargains in 2010 biggrin

Has to be black.

Silver is beyond tacky IMHO. Makes everything look like a £15 DVD player.
100% correct. Black will always be classic and timeless. It's this silver fad which I hate.
Quad equipment looks great in dark silver - a real heavy duty industrial design.

To all you lot slating 'running in cables' it can really make a hugely marked difference. No I'm not joking.
Great. You can actually pay for this to be done for you! http://www.russandrews.com/product.asp?lookup=1&am...

This Russ Andrews site is a great find, for so many reasons....

It's me secretly, the left handed screw driver business was getting a bit slow.

What do you think about this (dark brown/walnut) with a Panny PW6 charcoal plasma sat on it and an arcam solo movie unit with a silver quad lite 2 centre. Cable management might be tricky though. It just looks quite stylish to my eyes having see it the other day. Not cheap at £280 delivered from FurnitureVillage.

Care to explain the physics behind this ?
Yes, and exactly how many minutes, and what type of music works best...

[I'm a cable sceptic - I don't believe different speaker cables make a difference provided (1) they're up to the job, and (2) they don't themselves deliberately influence the sound by having significant capacitance or reactance.]
Don't know how (and I'm as big a sceptic as anyone on here), but I used to build lots of various bits of hifi. My opinion is based upon experience, on one occasion hooked up some new cable and listened to a few tracks, sounded alright. Left a CD on loop and came back hours later and the improvement was significant.

Different cables certainly do have very different sound (experienced different speaker cables more than anything). Not only is it the RLC of the piece of wire, but also noise rejection due to it's geometry. Why else do you get different network cable specified for use to different frequencies?

Old school I know, but.....

....does anybody else miss the level meters or graphic equaliser diodes on the front? I remember as a kid sitting there mesmerised for hours litening to records and watching the needles then (later on) lights jumping around...

Probably because the amp and CD player got up to temperature.

Possibly, but I'm quite convinced there is more to it than that (apart from the fact I have never really ever switched my kit off).

Of course I knew I'd be up against general opinion on this one.

ETA: To answer the original question, black is best.

Ah, but never switching off does not give the same effect as playing data/music though kit by some margin.

As ever though, the best thing to do is spend money on what mkes you happy. If you're happier with KIMBER Select KS-3038 Speaker Cable @ a tad under £4,500 for 8ft than something a little less 'audiophile' then that's great.

Mr Electron microscope says nothing happens at the power levels HiFi generates though smile. Now 20kw TV transmitters however...

smile This is why I used to DIY it. I'd never spend £XXXX's on cables when I can achieve the same result for £XX's.

Almost certainly down to the fact that the speakers and amplifier had properly warmed up.

I'm interested how much you get, as I was thinking of putting Audiolab 8000A and P on ebay and was wondering if it was the right place to sell them.
