Surprised they didn't seem to consider using IP addresses to try to identify the source (especially when he was using the 101 text chat service).
If he was messaging/chatting from an unregistered pay as you go phone then tracing the IP address is no help
I'd suspect any criminal with an ounce of common sense would know about vpn etc. possibly not.

I don't think that the crim in this particular case was exhibiting an overabundance of common sense.

I was quite surprised that they didn't search his phone earlier.

Just watched it, interesting episode.

Dan was clearly not stable. I don't think prison will do him much good, he seems vulnerable so he won't have a good time.

It's not meant to do him good, it's a punishment, if he learns the lesson, that if you don't want to be put in the bad place then don't do bad things.

Exactly, the appalling messages he sent were utterly vile and over the top, about killing her kids etc. he deserves no sympathy whatsoever.

Absolutely.

We need to keep him and others like him out of general circulation.

The UK doesn't have the resources to try to rehabilitate the millions of nasty violent/rapey/stalky 'ill' people.

It has to be both doesn't it? Because as it is he's definitely going to come out after a few years bitter about the fact that it was "a woman's fault" he went to prison.

We need to be realistic. The bloke is a cretin and that isn't going to change. Or perhaps you can imagine a world where the simpleton suddenly realises the error of his ways and turns over a new leaf?

We can only hope he gets put back in prison shortly after he gets out. This acknowledges he'll re-offend but hopes he gets caught in short order.

I didn't think the police came across well in this, they were clueless. Saying "whoever it is has gone to great lengths to hide their identity", I mean I'm not sure using 141 is the height of identity concealment.

Forgive me, perhaps I worded that badly.

I meant he is already mentally unstable, I think prison will perhaps make him worse.

Yes. Should be retired but I think his wife died? Maybe he didn’t retire?
