Awful. New Zealand, one of the most peaceful nations out there. Throw the book at them, and all of their accomplices. No way something like this, live streamed and in multiple locations, was just 3 or 4 people.

So sad. Rip to all. frown

Awful news to wake up to - going into a place of worship to commit such an act is totally fked up. RIP to those involved.

A little bit numb reading this.

I wonder if the Australian gunman realised the irony of commiting his anti immigration acts in another country - clearly just a .

I didn’t realise we had such a Kiwi contingent here on PH.

I love your country and have the fondest memories of time spent there as a child. As somebody says above even in today’s crazy world NZ feels insulated from much of the lunacy that goes on elsewhere. A trusting, accepting place.

It’s so sad to see this happen.

I love New Zealand and it's all the more horrific for being somewhere so chilled and peaceful.

The fact there's a cheering audience for it should concern us all.

Only good news is that the gunmen have been caught, are alive and able to go on trial.

We are a country almost entirely comprised of immigrants, with almost no racial or religious tension. It's just crazy I really don't understand at all where this would come from.

"For those of you who are watching at home tonight and questioning how this could have happened here, we, New Zealand, we were not a target because we are a safe harbour for those who hate. We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism, because we’re an enclave for extremism, we were chosen for the very fact that we are none of these things, because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion, a home for those that share our values, a refuge for those who need it. And those values, I can assure you, will not and cannot be shaken by this attack.

We are a proud nation of more than 200 ethnicities, 160 languages, and amongst that diversity we share common values. And the one that we place currency on right now is our compassion and the support for the community of those directly affected by this tragedy and secondly, the strongest possible condemnation of the ideology of the people that did this.

You may have chosen us, but we utterly reject and condemn you."

- Jacinda Adern, NZ PM.

Demonise people enough and that's where you end up sadly.

Absolutely horrific.

I think our national psyche is probably a bit bruised today. I was in Europe on family holiday when the truck attack in France happened, whilst it was shocking, it wasn't really surprising, in the context. This is.

This ^^^

So far 4 arrested and the police are looking for (possibly) more. Absolute scrum of the lowest type.

Unfortunately I think that's what they would have wanted so that they can spread their hate in court.
