Put just about anything anybody else says into Trumps mouth and it will be slaughtered, leave it at source and it will be praised, justified and redeemed.
I'm amazed if you sincerely belive that.

And as hoary an old chestnut as it is the complete refusal to see anything other than your laser beam like attention to a tiny slice of the spectrum is why this idiot is president in the first place. God fking help us if he gets in again but it's entirely possible while everyone obsesses with the colour of his hair and what party he went to in the eighties.
This is a discussion thread, not a presidential ballot. What we say or discuss here is entirely irrelevant to what happens in the next US election. The latest debating points from the 'other side', as it were, have contained a large dollop of 'if he gets in again it's your fault' trope. I have news for you - it really isn't.

There also seems to be a strong message along the lines of 'calling Trump out on his conduct and behaviour past and present isn't the way to defeat him at the polls'. I'm intrigued to know what winning strategy is suggested as an alternative. I'm assuming here that emphasising their policies on healthcare, the environment, trade etc are a given.

For what it's worth, I do agree that the Dems are making a bit of a horlicks of opposing Trump, they lack cohesion and a compelling candidate for prez, and it's entirely possible Trump will get a 2nd term as a result.

That isn't our fault though, okay?

The biggest problem with US politics, of which Trump is a symptom, is the two party system. I utterly despise the Republicans (with or without Trump) but I despair at the Democrats. Good god, the Dems can't organise a piss-up in a brewery. When you see the two camps debate its like watching polar opposites argue in a pub: sneering mobsters in one corner and self righteous college professors in the other. There is no middle ground and when one side gets in, the other does ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING to frustrate the other. I don't disagree that the Dems are halting a truly horrendous Republican agenda right now but the Republicans made it almost impossible for the Obama administration to do anything.

When did you ever see a US president actually debate something or answer to the public? Even Putin has town hall meetings (as staged as the are). Can you imagine Trump in a Prime Ministers Question Time scenario?

The whole system is awful. It really is not democracy the way we would understand it. It's certainly not the Land of the Free(tm). It is not 'of the people, by the people, for the people'.

The Dems may oust Trump in 2020. And then what? Unless they control both houses they won't be able to undo a lot of the damage. The fundamental problem is the US political system and its complete lack of accountability. Just remember that George Bush Jr got two terms and he was a bone fide idiot.

The mere thought is genuinely hilarious. I would be prepared to spend my own money for that on pay per view!

Trump's base is so (metaphorically) trigger-happy that obvious satire (including the word 'satire' in the lead pic!) is enough to make them trigger-happy for real.

This is real TDS: a cop falls for a made-up news story from a site called "tatersgonnatate.com" and says AOC needs to be shot.

(I realise that in posting this, forumite 'hyphen' will now demand that AOC provides reasons why she should not be shot, but that's a risk that I'm willing to take.)

The US has decided to not help the UK in respect of the British tanker seizure - even though it is alleged that we seized the Iranian tanker under US diplomatic pressure.

Thanks USA.

Agreed - but if the UK thinks that somehow America will run to our aid now that we are running away from Europe, I think the reaction to this incident is a true indication of the state of the so called "special relationship".

I wouldn't expect any help from the US unless it was mutually beneficial

And as has been pointed out above a lot of what Trump says is hated because he is Trump. When Clinton, Sanders or Obama quotes are attributed to Trump students think they are hateful.

When the it was first mooted back in the 1950s that parliamentary procedures might be televised, PM Winston Churchill said he didn't want Parliament to be debased by the "tuppeny ha'penny Punch and Judy Show". How right he was.

The format of PMQ as we have it today is very much tuned to the fact that it is televised. It didn't really exist in that format in Churchill's time - and he was very concerned that bringing TV cameras into Westminster would turn it all into a "performance" rather than something of substance.
