Two issues here, the first one is related to the current scenario, after every event the base line that the Severn has dropped to before the next rise has got higher and higher. It's been 2-3 metres above normal for 3 weeks.

Second thing about the possibility to generate flood relief areas just consider the scale of things required.
Following photos are of the Kidderminster flood alleviation scheme for the River Stour.

Peak flow historically for the Stour is 23m^3 per second. The Severn has been flowing at 500m^3 per second for days. If you diverted half of that Severn flow into an area such as shown above it would be filled in 20 minutes.

That's the scale of the issue. Obviously every little helps, but it's a massive project over hundreds / thousands (?) of sites just for one major catchment area.

We will no doubt be laughing at the irony of having water use restrictions placed on many parts of the country, in just a few months, when we get the predicted `record' hot summers, that those who believe we have messed up the climate, have said are in store for us. smile
