Welll over half of Oxfordshire's 4.99% increase is going to 'adult social care'. That should come from central govt.
I was told yesterday that 87% of East Sussex council tax goes on adult social care, highways takes 13% leaving 10% to cover everything else.

Those numbers don't appear to add up.

They add up, just not to the correct number.

I think we’ve found one of the council’s accountants!

5% increase for us, taking us to almost £3,800 a year.

fking outrageous. They probably want to upgrade the hotel rooms for boat people.
Aside from the fact that there have been large reductions in these costs as claims are being processed faster and numbers drop, they aren’t funded by council tax.

9% here in NE Wales for me I believe, not insignificant! And they're reducing general waste bin collections to once every three weeks at the same time for good measure. (I know that's a small part of where my money goes, but still!)
I’m guessing you like me, live in Flintshire, it’s actually 9.5%.

In the last 4 years we’ve had:

2022/23 - 5%
2023/24 - 4%
2024/25 - 9%
2025/26 - 9.5%

Like you say, services are being cut whilst an inflation busting council tax rise is on the cards.

Flintshire are regularly at the bottom of the pile in terms of funding from Cardiff, so until people stop voting Labour both nationally and locally, nothing will ever change… rolleyes

Correct. I don't mind paying my way in life, but the council tax rises are always the hardest to swallow.

Up 5% to £3,518.75, band F, County Durham. Almost three grand to have our bins collected (I don't mind the £600 for emergency services).

I get my state pension in a few months.

Nearly a third will be going back to the Government by way of council tax.

County council have a 5% increase cap imposed by government (although some have got agreement to go above this).

There is no limit on the percentage increase that can be implemented by Parish Councils.

So the country councils have been devolving their powers and services to parish councils.

Smoke and mirrors
Any examples?

A quick google for me found nothing.
The district council here started a scheme where Parish/Town councils could take over public toilets - they'd be responsible for all upkeep but would get no funding towards it. Unsurprisingly, none took them up on the offer.

Ours is going up by 10% so they can pour more money into vanity projects and furnish the roads with even more street furniture and speed bumps, close to £3000 a year, it's an utter piss take.

It effects different Parrish Councils(PC) in different ways. Some are just slowly withdrawing services, knowing full well the PC's will have to pick them up. Some as has already been shown are just handing over responsibility to the PC. Some are increasing the charges that the PC has to pay them. Others are charging the PC's for services that where previously free.

Just because google doesn't show it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

County Durham too.

We moved from an ex-council house to a new build of about the same size. We have the same income, but our council tax doubled after we moved.

When does it end? I feel considerably poorer than I did a few years ago. Everything is increasing a huge amount, more than my wages have done. Council tax, Gas, mortgage ,electric, internet, food etc etc. It's just more money after more money going out.

I posted on another thread but I'm 42 working in the NHS, a reasonable job yet I have nothing left at the end of the month. I feel like a teenager who empties their bank account each month. No real chance of savings etc. No flash holidays. Old cars etc. Yeah we're better than a lot, but compared to how my parents were at a similar age I feel like an absolute failure.

6% increase here and, as with a few on this thread, the parish council part has increased a lot (30%).
