Investing in rare(ish) comics

My first child is due in the next few weeks and I'd like to do something other than just put a pound in an ISA for them so I've started thinking of something a bit different.

After doing a bit of reading on the subject and it seems that first edition comic books are quite a steady bet so long as you buy the best, in first prints and obviously with certs to match.

Has anyone done similar things or has any alternatives to the usual shares and bonds?

Not looking to initial invest anything over £1000 and it'll be for 18 years at least.
