Renting, is this normal?
Discussion
Keep in mind that in a lot of areas it is a Landlord's market. Prospective tenants are queuing up to rent. In these cases the Landlord can be choosey. They are not obliged to let to anyone that applies and may turn someone down because they don't like the look of their details. Remember, they are trying to protect their investment and may choose someone conventionally employed in a long term job over someone running a one man Limited Company.
In terms of paying six months rent up front, this can be appealing and get you around affordability checks. However, a Landlord may still prefer a tenant in a steady job that is looking to rent for some years.
I am glad you got sorted in the end. Enjoy your new home
