Induction hob buttons not working?

There was a Fagor IFF-4R induction hob in the house when we moved in. It's probably 2 or 3 years old.
The touch buttons have been slowly getting harder to activate until today when it all stops working, typically as we're due to have friends round for dinner tonight (takeaway curry I think).
Any clues on what would cause this? I assume it's not a user serviceable (or changeable) part.
Assuming the engineer visit, and subsequent part, is near enough the cost of a new one can anybody recommend a replacement 60cm induction hob in the 'up to £400' bracket?
