Just been through the whole new mattress process today and here's how it went.

Our current mattress is at least 15 years old, I inherited it sort of, but it was a top of the range King Koil Superking at the time - now it's just not responsive, is firmer in some bits and while it doesn't hurt my back, I find it hard to get settled and I'm always moving around (which wakes the wife), and she has a bit of a sore lower back.

She is tiny, around 43kg I think, and she was adamant that a harder bed would sort her out but both the very nice ladies at John Lewis & Dreams said exactly the same thing, she needs a softer bed to allow her hips and shoulders to level out to keep her spine straight and support the bits in between the bumps and lumps.

We were in John Lewis (Cribbs Causeway, Bristol) first and tried loads of different beds from traditional, to hybrid and memory foam - all different budgets but you could see that there is pretty much a direct correlation between price and quality. We'd seen the recent advertising for Simba (& Casper, Eve, Emma, etc...) so gave that a go, quite nice, but it was apparent that there are better beds, albeit more expensive. One of the traditional ones was very nice - nice trad mattress - but we then plonked ourselves on the Tempur Cloud Elite and both went, 'Ooohhh! That's interesting!' The wife had never been on one and was so surprised at how it felt and I could instantly see that she looked 'flat' in it - perfectly lined up. I too plonked on it and really liked it - I've slept on them before, never had an issue with them being too hot but found them slow to spring back - seems they've got this better now. While not instantaneous, it was fast enough. Tempur Cloud Elite

We then went to Dreams nearby to see what they had. We tried a few more traditional ones but the Tempur still felt the best - Dreams had a exclusive cooltemp cover thing but couldn't get within £215 for the same mattress and the cover isn't worth that to us, so that was the deal breaker - back to John Lewis and we should get the mattress week on Saturday.

Pillows - tried the Tempur Cloud pillow and it is LUSH!, then we tried the Comfort pillow which is is a bit firmer and that was LUSHER!!!! So we bought two of those as well. The Comfort Pillow

An interesting experience and hope it's worth it as you can't tell how these things are to live with until you've done some time with them - this was the initial draw to the 100 day trials with Simba & co, but they're a touch too firm and we didn't get the same 'feel' from them as the Tempur.

Let you know how we get on.

It's arrived!

Had the pillows since we ordered and they're brilliant - you think they'd be too firm or slight sleeping on a sandbag, but they now simply seem to be 'right'.
