Interested in this. We're currently finishing up with EON and have been looking at Octopus. We've got a pv array we own ourselves, no gas, just electric and oil.

Any experience with Octopus serving this sort of setup?
As the biggest investor in solar PV farms in the UK I think they might be able to do this stuff & plumb it into your car & VtoG etc.

Just had a chat from a salesman at Octopus, as per when I joined Bulb they are able to match Bulbs current rate and as such quoted me what I am currently paying, as well as for their other tariffs, as below. They are all renewable elec, the super green includes carbon off-setting for the gas. Monthly DD is 12th of the total.

Variable rate (both) £1650
Oct Fixed for 12mth £1714
Oct 'super green' £1800

Been with them 2 years ish now. I would not go back to any of the big 6 even if they were some how cheaper than Octopus.
Octopus;
Good customer service
Cheap tarifs
Honest and clear billing - monthly bills
refund money quickly if you are in too much credit.

I won't name which other big 6 companys but prior to these guys we had problems with being overbilled, nightmare time changing supplier, long hold times trying ot sort it out + repeated calls to them, rip off tarifs, and a real hard time getting any credit back.

Yup. I got transferred to them from IRESA, when IRESA went bust.

I was also still having issues with incorrect supply numbers from when I was with EON, 3 years prior. Octopus and Co-Op (my previous supplier - when GB Energy went bust!) provided excellent customer service - Octopus especially, for which I am so grateful I decided to stay with them rather than go on my usual hunt for the cheapest.

On the face of it, customer service shouldn't be an issue - I mean, all they have to do is supply electricity and issue a bill. Unfortunately, it would seem that most struggle with this... customer service at EON is quite atrocious....

Also found this out to my cost with an attempted switch to an 'app and chat bot only' supplier. The app never worked, only advise came from other customers via a forum (reinstall app... still didn't work), I was never able to send an opening meter reading, then 3 months after the switch was meant to have begun, they emailed me saying that I had a pre-pay meter (eh? news to me) so couldn't take me on as a customer. In this time I was paying high 'out of contract' rates to heat a Victorian moneypit house.

By comparison, moving to Octopus was the easiest thing ever - took about 2 weeks.

I was previously with Iresa who went bust in the summer, so was automatically transferred to Octopus. Early days, but they're more efficient than Iresa were. Iresa were cheap, so probably why they went bust.

I'm on their variable tariff at the mo, but haven't found a better fixed tariff yet.

I am also looking to switch. Currently with British gas but want to keep my smart meter, does anyone know if Octopus or Bulb offer this?

Bulb don't as I've just started the process to switch over from BG, I tried to switch to Octopus last year but they cancelled the switch due to my BG smart meters not being compatible with them, don't know if they are compatible now though.

I initiated a switch with Octopus then cancelled within a week (better offer from old suppliers retentions section).

Received an automated email a couple of weeks later which indicated the transfer was still in process. Emailed them and got confirmation it was definitely cancelled.

As you can guess, next call, a few days ago, was from my original supplier saying Octopus had carried out the transfer and they had begun the 3 week process to transfer it back again.

I'm hoping it will be pain-free but not confident.

Really need to switch to Octupus I think, British Gas (who do the electric also) are so expensive! and a joke to deal with.

Question/advice please, when selecting rates should I just go on the 'low, medium, high' which uses national average, I would come under low or use my 'actual usage' which I can get from my annual estimate. Not been in my place that long but I'm keen to sort this out so any help appreciated.

Thanks

If you've got the real figures to hand, I'd use them.

Otherwise you'll either be sending them extra money for them to earn interest on, or they'll hit you with a nasty shock when they catch up with your actual usage.

I'm on the Octopus Go tariff and buying 85%+ of my grid energy at 5p a kWh, which is extraordinarily good value.

I selected 'medium' and the monthly direct debit was roughly what I paid my previous provider. As we're heading into summer (supposedly), I'd expect to use far less gas and electricity, so will more than likely run up a credit. If you can, use your actual energy use if you can.

Help yourself to £50 when signing up by using the link in my above post!

Let me be the first to speak ill of the hallowed Octopus...

Does nobody else think that monthly meter readings is a bit much, there's a ton of stuff in the cupboard under the stairs and I'm fed up emptying it every bloody month.

Or the email telling me my direct debit is coming out soon - I know it's coming out soon, nobody else forewarns me about an upcoming regular monthly direct debit.

Love and power. x

What if you don't bother?

I get asked every month (different supplier) but rarely ever done it.

It takes me two minutes to take a meter reading, so it doesn't bother me at all. Plus, you get to play the roulette game when you submit your readings - never won yet though hehe
