I'll be up to watch the F1 at 6 and be pretty cold until 7am where I'll turn every electric heater on i can find in the house, along with the washer, dryer and dishwasher.
Atleast it's a semi reasonable time this time rather than middle of the day midweek.

For anyone on Agile or Tracker and wondering why price has gone up this explains why....

The price cap looks forward and buys energy in advance, so looks expensive when prices are coming down as they have been generally over the last 2 or 3 years. Tracker and Agile buy energy on the spot market and so look expensive when prices are going up as the spot market is above where the price cap would have bought it months ago. We're seeing a period of sustained gas price increases as we get into winter and at the same time a period of low wind output which normally softens the power price. There is usually a bit of a price rally as we enter winter, although last year it was unusually warm and we didn't have many cold days. Where prices go from here depends on the weather, if it gets warm and windy again like last year prices will come off, but more cold temperatures and price will keep going up.

Spot gas price has increased from 60/70p at the back end of last winter when we came out with high stock levels, to about 115/120p now.

As ever Agile relies on you moving power out of expensive periods (4-7pm), and Tracker is for people with a higher risk appetite than fixed prices. What everyone is worried about is a cold snap at the end of winter ala Beast from the East of about 2017 fame, when there simply isn't much/any gas left and people want to heat their homes.

I am still on the fence with Tracker. My yearly projection on Tracker (which I have been on for years) compared to Octo 12 month fix is virtually the same. We pay 140 a month for both gas and electric for our 3 bed semi. Yearly expected bill is shown £1990 odd.

Noted - Thanks. Again, don't use the tumble, but washing machine and tumble planned - and signed up for alerts.

A quick comparison check shows EON Next may be 16 quid a month cheaper, however that figure is fixed. Although the site could see my usage and current Octopus plan, I don't think it knows exactly how Tracker is doing for us. We use 50% less gas than out neighbours as turn our heating off and use the stove.

Really torn atm about moving my gas from tracker to fixed...

The average price has been really good for me and in the 5p region but with winter coming and the new price cap the offered fix is 5.91p which feels appealing

Anyone got any thoughts?

I changed from Tracker to Fixed earlier this week - mostly for peace of mind. I'll revisit this next year. My fix was at 5.68p/29.38p - a not insignificant rise off my 3 year fix that ended in September (4.15p).

I moved from British Gas to Octopus earlier this year. Mainly because BG completely screwed up my billing when I got a PHEV last year and went on a cheap overnight tariff. They swapped the tariff without telling me my existing smart meter would be able to manage the different day/night tariffs. When I discovered this for them after 3 months they argued like hell before giving me a £100 refund (not calculated just a gesture). The, wait for it, the new smart meter didn't work, or rather it wasn't sending the right data, something else I discovered for them and again they argued like hell not to give me any money back. Eventually I had enough and complained to the Energy Ombudsmen who were excellent and took my case for me. They got me another £160 goodwill payment and I ended my contract with BG. What a shambles!!!

Then when I wanted to switch to Octopus I couldn't because it turned out BG had not assigned the correct address to our electricity meter since the house was built in 1993. House name was correct but the street was wrong, they'd been billing me okay for 7 years but Octopus couldn't take on the meter until it was corrected which... BG can't do. Apparently it's some central data records administration office. Back to the Ombudsman, who were getting pretty used to me complaining now and eventually after 2 or 3 more months it was corrected and I got rid of British Gas!

Been with Octopus since the summer now and they are fine, rates seem okay, communication is excellent - they actually answer emails and the phone, and their website is easy to use and shows usage and stuff properly. I'm not aiming to save a penny here or a pound or two each month, just happy to be with a supplier that's responsive and seems to know what they're doing so I'd recommend them biggrin

We've been with octopus for a few years and are generally happy with them. We've talked a few times about getting solar, but not done anything about it. Octopus have now got another promotion with a discount, which looks to be about 12K for 14 panels and a 5kw battery with 3 years interest free credit- I've just asked for a personalised quote to get that price checked.
Has anyone any experience of octopus solar installation?

I can't see how anybody would be able to recoup the cost of installing solar panels if paying out of their own pocket.
My electricity bill for a 4 bed house is ~£1k a year including EV charging. Even if half of that is supplied from the solar panels (unlikely given the amount of direct sunlight in this country), you're looking at a 25 year recuperation period. And that's if nothing goes wrong and you ignore the opportunity cost of the upfront £12k and time value of money.

The money is made on the export.

I had solar installed in May (10k) and so far have exported around £800 in energy.

That's a very low electricity bill, especially for someone with an EV. We pay about £480 per year, currently. Our bill previously was £1300 per year and that didn't include charging our EV. I haven't made a huge amount on export, probably about £200 this year. Total install price was £16k, but that included having the roof done at the same time. The roof separately would probably have cost about £8k, for what we had done. So £8k excess for the solar and a 9.5kwh battery. As we have a battery we have also made about £80ish on the saving sessions they had.

Something is better than nothing smile

Not surprised they have made changes as once you knew how to game the system you could do quite well out of it.

For me it was already borderline whether it was worth sitting in the dark for an hour for 50p, but for 5 to 10p they can forget it!
