The 'Harpenden wker tax'

If you're ever unfortunate enough to find yourself in Harpenden the best thing you can do is leave.

Tring however is a very pleasant part of the world, I've spent many a sunny Saturday afternoon riding my bike in that area smile
Oi! Some of us grew up there! biggrin

Harpenden is entirely fine. If your experience is wker centric, you might want to consider who you’re mixing with or where you go, and change that. biggrin

Agreed. We visit my in-laws there and always enjoy the town and surrounding countryside. I couldn’t fault the place at all.

Following the Bowness property posted earlier, I found this one.

Our old family home - it's been through a few other owners since then and has lost its appeal for me, so not sure if it qualifies for this thread.

You can't change the views however and I have many happy memories of summer evening barbecues on the patio, lunches in the Tower Bank Arms and days out sailing (I won't say 'on the lake' laugh )

This is a textbook example of what I regard as property pawn.

- interesting property
- off street parking & space for a garage
- nice views over water
- large garden, but not daft
- can easily walk to amenities
- bonus points that I really like the location

Pawn with bells on for me yes
Thanks, when you say it like that - yes, the happy memories still make it pawn!!

We were on first name terms with the ferry crews as our boat was moored in the bay next to the research centre.

Changes since left are; the annex was a double garage and where the single garage is now was where we parked the small boat trailer.

The middle bedroom didn’t have a balcony, the sun room has been stuck on the side and the rooms weren’t knocked through. Just different times and tastes.
I was going to ask, being nosey, what sort of jobs / businesses people had locally to support those sort of house values - but I see it last sold in 2015 for £775K so the current owner will do remarkably well if it sells near asking.

Check out the interior of this cottage in Conwy, Wales. There’s a few surprises in there!

About as eclectic an interior as we've ever had. I've walked past that many times and had no inkling
It’s all rather wonderful until we get to two silly bathrooms. Easily fixed though.
Just looked at the street view image. It's a no from me.

Not to get too off topic, but my partner is from Harpenden, and I'm there a fair bit mixing with her friends... Gotta say, seems perfectly fine to me?? Nice, even.

Pretty sure I know the current owner, in to his cars, made a decent chunk from selling a business and dabbles in other stuff now.

I like it.

Fabulous.

The cabin on stilts at the waterside genuinely appeals to me more than the main house does.

Love some of the details in the main house though - especially that staircase.
Yeah it's lovely but realistically how much can you use the outdoor facilities?
Much like in Finland, its a misconception that's its basically always cold.

https://nomadseason.com/climate/sweden/varmland/su...

We have the same in Finland (Nokia) and some cant believe it can be 30 in summer and -20 in winter.

I spent a hedonistic summer up around Oulu in my late teens (partially funded by the government!) - and yeah, was bloody gorgeous weather although the mozzies were unlike anything I've ever seen or experienced!

Ah yes... the great secret... they don't tell you about the mozzies/black fly as the Finns don't care about them, or if there is a foreigner around, the Finns are ignored as there is a new tasty target in the vicinity... I always take heavy duty (read lots of DEET) sprays and the like when I go.

Deet didn't exist back then! Or at least, we'd never heard of it.

There were 30 of us. I was clearly one of the tastiest, although one of the girls went through a genuinely traumatic experience due to them. Ended up being sold some god awful concoction brewed from tree bark iirc. Looked and smelt like ronseal, but none of us late teens cared if it helped keep them off! Lotti, who provided young Master Sway an incredibly formative experience, didn't seem to care...

To give you an idea of how bad they are - I witnessed one land on a mozzies head net thingy, and it was big enough to be able to weigh the net down so it'd touch the skin then it bit the victim through the net!

I had a very bad experience once never again, although it looks a lovely place.

Garden on a slope though, don't think my knees would cope, yes it has terracing but I'd get pee'd off with that very quickly.

It is nice, objectively so (and I live there) - lovely common, nice high-street, farmers market, great schools. But I also take Tango's point, it's ridiculously expensive as everyone knows and as the grey-brigade slowly die-off, it attracts a certain type of person. It's definitely more "wky" now than 10 years ago - lot's of new money or help (read massive deposit) from Daddy.

As this is PH, I bought a new car from Oulu. Yes, really!
Drove it to Jyvaskyla where it was heavily tuned, then flew back and drove it back to Lux a month or so later, using the Helsinki-Rostock stty ferry.

It was very different in the late 80s when we had it - I can't remember the prices involved and Rightmove doesn't go back that far. Bearing in mind that my two up two down terrace in Harrogate was £42k at the time rofl

My father is a retired Army officer and was working locally (-ish laugh ).

Nice walk down to The Pack Horse pub for Sunday Lunch.

Had the venison in there on Sunday, very nice too!

That would be right up my street. I'm over Cambridge way, but I do think that area is so much better way of life and will consider moving that way when I retire.
