For various reasons I had to get some temporary bedding for a few months. Buying beds seemed like a waste (especially as we wouldn’t have anywhere to put them) and blow up mattresses seemed inadequate for six months. We decided on some traditional Japanese futons, because we could store them afterwards so we could get some use in the future as spare beds for quests.

When they arrived I was a bit skeptical as when I put them on the floor they seemed quite thin and I wondered whether I could really sleep comfortably on one. The reality has been a complete surprise. I sleep really well on them. I think I prefer it to our bed. The only downside is that it isn’t as easy getting up to go to the toilet during the night, compared to a bed that is off the floor.

Things that you have bought or tried with very low expectations but have completely surprised you?

I bought a cheap (still £10!) 'ASDA essentials' joint of Beef for Sunday lunch. It was actually quite nice.

About 10ish years ago, Vikingette1 needed a new mattress for her bed. Memory foam mattress were fairly new and seemed a bit of a scam so I was reluctant to commit £500+ on one. Amazon had their Amazon Basics 7 zone memory foam mattress for around £60-70. So I bought one. If it was crap, I'd bin it.

When it arrived I let it air for 24 hours. Most people make the mistake of sitting their fat arris on a mattresses, and with memory foam, with all the weight in one position you invariably sink down further than a sprung mattress. You have to lie on it (surprise surprise). And this £60 mattress was the most comfortable thing around being supportive and warm. I lost count of the times I'd pop into Vikingettes room to chat to her, lie on her bed and fall asleep!.... and be rudely woken by her slapping me when I snored. I bought one for V2's bed and my family ordered several more.

I had Covid a few weeks ago and was confined to Vikingettes room (she's at Uni) and it was almost a pleasure to have Covid on such a comfortable bed! biggrin

Not the cheapest, but the Dreamland heated electric throws (£80) are absolutely brilliant.

Easily saved their cost in heating this winter.

Can also be used as an electric blanket, and are fully machine washable.

Heated underblanket as well, plugged into a smart plug. Always thought they were for old people, but pre-heated for 15 minutes before bed on the coldest nights makes it lovely and warm cloud9

I bought one of the Emma ones yep it’s good. Funny thing… I’d seen that they deliver vacuum packed of course so it’s smaller. Anyway, a week or so after ordering the doorbell went and delivery guy asked me sign for a package, about the size and weight of a telephone book…. For a very brief second I thought WOW.. forgetting about something else I’d ordered….doh.

Mine lived nearly 16 years, helped me through a very difficult time even though he was called Basil.

Tesco's Oat and Barley bread. Thick sliced, superb in sandwiches and excellent for toast. We don't have anything else now, and even keep a couple of loaves in the freezer in case Tesco don't have any when we go shopping.

Iceland Big Daddy steaks. £5.50 for a 16oz rump, so £4.95 on a Tuesday as I'm 60. Cooks up ridiculously well.

My genuine Dremel lasted about two uses before it coughed up electrons and died.
