Insurance Issues
Discussion
Hello All
I need some insurance advice: Here is the context:
I am having some guests over during Easter and I will need a bigger car to ferry everybody around. My car is a VX Astra and insured with LV, my wife's Yaris Hybrid is insured with Directline. My wife is second driver on mine and I am on hers. My brother in law has agreed to lend me his 8 seater Nissan Serena (imported from Japan) for that purpose. It is taxed and MOTed. However there is no insurnce on the vehicle. I have tried all if not most of the short term cover insurers online and none are willing to provide cover for that vehicle (is it because it is imported??).
How do I go about getting insurance for the Nissan Serena. I have not spoken to my insurance yet and I want to hear from you first.

Is your brother in law intending to use the vehicle himself anytime soon?
If so, what about he reinsures it and has you as a named driver? (But tells the insurer that between x & y dates you will be borrowing it to avoid a risk of fronting)
Or, you shuffle people around in the two cars you've got. Might end up being easier.
Or hire a vehicle that includes insurance?
Or use public transport in conjunction with Uber/taxi?

I was quoted £343.91 on comparison site for a year. The plan is to buy the insurance and cancel it within 14days and hopefully get most of my money back

I hope you can get past the "are you the registered keeper" & "are you the owner" questions. These can be a pain on those comparison sites>
Unless you need to cover 2 cars at the same time, why not transfer one insurance to the one you need, and then back again afterwards? It'll depend on if there is an 'admin' cost as to whether it is worth it. Direct Line don't charge one, it is done pro rata. Ask them? (Edited because I later noticed LV wouldn't cover it, possibly because its an import
)
If you go ahead with a new policy and you have cover for less than 14 days, there shouldn't be a cancellation fee, this is the legal 'cooling off' period.
