We have a lovely field behind our house, it has cows and geese and a pond. Owned by a farmer. Some weeks ago there was a big drill thing at one end of the field, after a few days it moved to the other end.

Now, there is a man walking up and down the field over and over again, presumably measuring.

Are they going to build 10,000 Barret Homes on here?

There used to be mining in this area so I'm hoping it'll be too bad to build on, but not so bad that my house sinks into it.

I suspect they are not going to carrying out SI for the fun of it, so your suspicions are probably correct.

..wind turbines perhaps (after Govt announcement)?

Are you able to find a picture (on the web) of the machine you saw?

I'm wondering if they were doing something agricultural that might be obvious (to another forum member) from the equipment used.

Have a look on your local planning portal, most have a map you can zoom in on, set the time line to forever, normally default to the last few months. If there is a planning application typically a red line around the area and you can click it to get the property ID and further info.

Don't think it was to do with farming. Contractors and a tall vertical drill, generators. Cows had never seen anything like it.

Have you approached the council planning dept? They might be like ours and have a planning interactive map.

The problem is great views aren't guaranteed anymore.

I was commenting the other day - there's a penthouse flat with a great view over Man Utd ground. Before there was a lower level block that's now knocked down and like many in Manchester it's going to be obscured.

They'll build on it and your house will flood.

On the plus side I hear goose is quite tasty.

Would that be the one that's in a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'beware of the leopard'?

As well as checking the LA’s planning map/portal, you also need to have a look at whether the site has been allocated in the local plan.

However, if either of those were the case, I suspect you may have heard something on the local grapevine (or had a neighbour letter, if you’re that close) so it’s possible that it’s either something innocuous (drainage works or something) or the landowner is at a very early stage of investigating the site and hasn’t formally submitted planning yet.

Do this, at your peril.

I used to be the man doing the measuring, I would have told you it was the site for a new prison, secure hospital, motorway, industrial estate, recycling plant, sewage works, in fact any old guff that would be likely to enrage the local gossips.

Normally we were simply locating underground services.

Good Luck!

There are some interesting agricultural land drainage machinery that could be mistaken for construction equipment, eg https://www.milesdrainage.co.uk/mole-drainage-suff...

Has the farmer recently acquired a new RangeRover?
