Tetrion filler. Cracking stuff to use, seen loads of decorator's using this on jobs. Rubs down really easily as well.

I worked my way through university as a decorator....

Pretty much any of the powder fillers are fine, we liked Tetrion in the orange box.

In B and Q, go to the plasterers tools (radios...), find a caulker, just an oblong bit of plastic with a handle, mix some filler to a nice soggy runny consistency, apply with caulker over a big area, thin covering, leave to dry. Sand with a cork block and some garnet paper.

You might find a coat of paint before filling and repainting helps too. If its proving tough, a quick coat of vinyl silk, then do the filling, then over paint with your choice.

I just did a little filling job as part of my ongoing kitchen project. I had a gas pipe disconnected at the meter and new connection made. This meant I had to cut off the unused pipe and grind it back into the wall (it was mild steel). I then painted the metal with some Bondaprimer I happened to have in the garage to prevent rust coming through after filling, then I filled it with a bit of plastic padding P38 first, then final skimmed it with the Wickes filler shown in the second picture. I've been using this on various small holes/defects (despite having a plasterer skim the ceiling and the wall shown) and I've been able to hide every blemish such that it can't be seen once painted.

I've also been recommended to use Artex as a filler, but the Wickes stuff works fine. I think it's just a matter of taking your time, overfilling slightly and sanding back in multiple directions to avoid ridges, preferably using a wood/rubber sanding block.

The gas pipe was just above where the skirting is now BTW.

Cheers all, trying to get interested again. DIY is a vastly overrated passtime wink
