Nope, it does pick it up, just at the very last point before you put your money in. Scanning your nectar card has the same effect of making it work out the discounts.

Crisps for £3.

I get the 'orange supermarket' Meal Deal most lunchtimes, and it 'corrects' the price when you select the method of payment. It done this for me at every single store I've done it at, so you're either doing something wrong, or there is a problem with that particular store's system.

I've bought meal deals before and I've never had to do that. It calculates the offer after I press the to pay button.

I agree with Diablo. Mine works it out as soon as you press the pay tab.

But the Tesco near my office is staffed by people who can't tell the difference between Pasta Salad type stuff (£1.99 for a largish box) and the 'Olive Bar' type stuff (£3 for a tiny pot) so lay them all out together mixed up - so I put a load of feta stuffed peppers and garlic stuffed olives in with my boiled egg, pasta, and leaf things - two years and no one had done anything about it.

I'd like to see the survey of how many people have homicidal feelings every time some windowlicker tries to use one and spends 20 mins trying to fathom out the glass thing reads barcodes and the big silver shelf you put them on is a scale, gives up and bobs up and down silently at the one staff member like some demented Meerkat .

Or worse the type of ahole who walks up to a queue of 10 people all waiting to use 6 self-service tills and thinks "what fools, they've obviously not seen these two at the end, I'll create a new queue, they'll obviously thank me for pointing it out".

I'm sure they do know the difference. If they challenge you on it, they'd be jobsworths, and if they don't, they're cretins. Either way, people manage to justify stealing.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, but it's theft. Tesco might be a big, faceless corporation, their employees might be window lickers, they might not have given you that discount that one time, etc, etc. Everyone who does it has a justification for it.

Same with music piracy. I don't care who downloads what, I even do it myself. I just hate hearing people talk about intellectual copyrights, greedy record labels, etc, trying to justify it. Just admit you want free st. I do.

No truer words spoken in my opinion.

I think everyone would pinch stuff or be dishonest given the right opportunity, wether it be knocking off a gold reserve with heavy artilary or simply finding £10 in the street and not handing it in.

Everybody has pinched at some point in their life, it's just that some refuse to admit it, and some try to make pointless arguments for it as mentioned above with the music piracy.

I wish people will just admit that they want free stuff, rather than "I do it because the staff are morons" or suchlike.

I promise in this case they don't. I'm talking about a 3m long refrigerated counter. At one end are boxes that come pre-loaded with a salad base for £2 or £3 depending on how much you want, at the other end are very small white poly tubs, they're £3 or £4 but about a third the size.

Inside the counter are a couple of dozen large pots of stuff, ranging from dried out cheese to little bits of fish in oil (yuk) and everything in between, there is no divider, no labels or sign that explains it - simply 4 ways of packaging the stuff up, priced individually

The stuff that in other stores is on the pricy counter can be right underneath the less pricy boxes and the cheap stuff like carrot sticks can be right down the other end, the staff in this store don't seem to know the difference and some of the stuff is a tricky judgement call as to what category it falls into.

My 'guilt' is limited to knowing that in most stores my garlic stuffed olives would be about £3 a cup, and if I was in one of those stores and fancied some I'd pay it, but in this store their offer is 4 different containers, 4 different prices.

P.S. Supermarket staff aren't stupid, well some of them aren't. I spent 2 wonderful years with Tesco during 6th form - was actually a pretty fun, well paid job for a kid - ok hardly conclusive proof, but a guy I knew who used to work there with me holds a Phd, specialises in Microsystems for drug discovery, worked at International Space School NASA and has invented some cleaver technology for Diabetes management.
