Setting their dogs on council officials who try to get on "their" site???

Any other person from any other element of society would firstly have the dog taken away and destroyed if it attacked someone, and secondly, be on some sort of public order charge.

It's about time things changed. They are a tiny percentage of people in the UK and totally live outside of our laws. If I went up there in summer and as much as pitched a tent overnight without leaving all the crap they do, I would be thrown off immediately for wild camping. We need a change in the laws regarding that specific section of the travelling community. They are not representative of their broader categorisation.

Moving them on is not the solution. They just go and fk up someone else's lives somewhere else. Create new laws targeting them.

Criminal scum.

Travellers set up camp in Reading gym car park

That's my gym, I got there on Monday night to find that I couldn't park anywhere for caravans. Meanwhile two of the gym instructors and a drafted-in security guard were having to stop their kids from nicking anything that wasn't nailed down.

The bizarre thing is, with the possible exception of one taunt early on in this thread, everyone, EVERYONE, has the same level of despisement for these people, for what they do, for how they live, for how the law (doesn't) treat them.

Away from the internet and forums, in my experience (and I've had a little to do with it) it's exactly the same. You'll get some pinko numb nut trying to defend them occasionally but otherwise they and everything which goes with them are hated, reviled, abhorred by the rest of society, even the mild-mannered janitors amongst us.

What is simply unfathomable, incomprehensible, is why there is not one single figure in authority anywhere who is prepared to even consider doing something about it. I firmly believe that this "problem" gets bigger and worse every year, and I strongly suspect that that's because people are now jumping on the bandwagon of "ooh, I'm a traveller" (because who ever checks, tests, for that?) and thus spending their summers thieving, cheating and lying their way around the countryside just because it's a bit of a lark from them, saves them from having to watch Jeremy Kyle all day and they're never going to get a tug for it.

There's a fair bit of focus on the thread towards the section of travellers who do actually travel and rock up on any old site to stay and generally foul it up.

What about the part that live on properly designated gypsy and traveller places.

Here's one charming chap, Gables Yard is an official site in Wyre Forest. link

Summary, paramedics called to yard attending man with badly cut arm. Spat in their faces, saying he will spit in the faces of anyone he wanted to. Police called, he does the same. In breach of suspended sentence for handling stolen car. What does he get, another suspended sentence, previous one not activated, plus more community service hours that the proven criminal won't serve. Ordered to pay compensation, but he is on benefits, so that won't be paid either.

There seems to be little will to really deal with these people, it's all very well the police serving them up to the courts if then the punishment is so shoddy. Society deserves better than this.

I'd really have no problem with them pitching up on some public land for a few days if they:

a) didn't damage it in any way
b) didn't inconvenience regular users of that land
c) left it as they found it, especially taking all their st away.
d) didn't commit any criminality when in residence

i.e. arrived, stayed for a bit, then did as their name suggest and fking travelled!

The reality is far from that, however.

In a lovely rural churchyard where people have to abide by strict rules on headstones some who have had an "exceptional life" can have this.

EXACTLY
And no politician has the balls to call it out either. This is the sort of thing that would resonate with a whole swathe of people. Ideal policy to formulate for say the Tory Party. But they won't. They might get called racist you see.

In choosing to identify themselves as a distinct racial group, doesn't that, therefore, make their attitudes and behaviour towards the rest of society inherently racist?

Just sayin' ...

I've been thinking lately about this.

Isn't the simple answer to refer to 'Travelling Criminals' - (with the caveat that this has no connection to the travelling community) - which is what everyone is complaining about. Criminals who travel - not travellers who criminal. wink

You will not find a (sensible) MP who will actively pursue a group of people defined as "Protected" under the law.

You will find lots of MPs who should actively pursue criminals.

Debating writing a letter to my MP about some criminals who have left remains of tree surgery business on a school field and have a myriad of stolen/uninsured/untaxed vehicles, and have dogs off leads.

Is this using the system well enough?

Ask Mr Corbyn, or perhaps someone who voted for him. Its a Labour manifesto pledge to end discrimination against them.

Quite right! Exactly the way it should be too!

I mean what alternative is there? The travellers being told to move their illegal encampment and stay away from the local park?

Why on earth are these things allowed to happen?
