Booze and the passing of time can be cruel.
I think when you are younger, you dont spot how old someone is as well, as everyone is old, its like Toni Basil who did that "Hey Mickey" song in the early eighties with the video where she is a cheerleader was nearly 40 back then, but looking at the video should could be anywhere between 20 and 40 really, think for a lot of people aging really kicks in past 40, some, like myself keep their boyish good looks
I think for men it happens quicker and more obviously, mainly based on hair, i.e. lack of or it going grey, seeing as it isnt regarded as standard practice for chaps to dye their hair like ladies do, my missus has hers coloured but would laugh at me if I did, I cant be arsed and am glad she does as dont want to wake up and see Zelda from Terrahawks.
Also weight plays a part, generally, younger people are slimmer, not always true but middle age creeps up along with a few extra pounds, so being bigger makes you look older generally.
Then there is lifestyle, I know some twins, one is a heavy smoker and has been for years, I didnt use to be able to tell them apart instantly back when we were kids, can now, the smoker is craggier and older looking.

While I don't disagree, can't help feeling there's a portrait in her attic that would frighten us all.1996-

There, that's the 'PH answer' out of the way.
No, actually I don't feel like that: +1 for sentiment expressed well above a couple of times - we all age, that's just life, and to quote Robert Plant as pictured above - into every life a little rain must fall. It's churlish to gurn and point fingers at others.
