Threads of a similar flavour crop up time and time again, but ultimately the correct way of doing things remains fairly constant.

It’s all about balance - striking the right one. Only you know whether you are doing that.

What is odd, is that she feels her opinion should be heard when, let’s face it, your relationship is in its infancy. You are dating. You don’t live together, you don’t have kids, or a mortgage together etc. I’d be less concerned about her opinions at this stage, and more concerned that she feels she can exert one on you.

It doesn’t sound like it bodes well for the future.

The Civil Service expect you to provide your own IT equipment?!
I wish. Instead they provide us with the most cutting edge computer that literally takes about five minutes to load and then freezes if you try to open a few programs and once. Think the bad boys are rocking 1GB RAM and a single core cpu. Obviously no expense was spared.

SUP sounds like a decent use of money tbh. Can't put a price on your physical/mental health. The SUP will benefit both of those.

I want a new set of wheel for my road bike (~£400). Been selling some stuff to fund them so I'm not using my monthly income which needs to go towards the mortgage/bills/kids etc. I know I'll get the same comments as the OP- why not make an extra mortgage payment/pay off student loan etc. when I order them but whatever. My wife is fine with it, at the end of the day it was all stuff sitting around not being used.

Years ago, I worked with a bloke who put it pretty simply - "The money you earn, you don't have to justify to anyone".

Of course, he went down for tax evasion, so you can take it a bit far.

It's about personal priorities. I'm quite enjoying explaining to people why I'm looking at spending 30% more on a set of tyres than I paid for the car they're going on!

Money is just a made up thing that helps control people anyway. Spend it how you like. As others have said – a paddle board is a great investment in your physical and mental health.

A chapter in the book I'm currently reading talks about how in the pre-money era then small communities would use favours and skills as currency. Society 'worked' using friendly gestures and owed favours. I know we're a long long way from this ever being possible given the single world we live in now but its a nice thought.
