He served in the US Navy Submarine Service, so it was probably a more appropriate vessel to name after him.

Apparently cancer did for him in the end. Melanoma, mestastisized into his liver and brain. He'd declined further intervention, and gone into hospice care at the end.

Not only that but so much more.

President Carter appointed more minorities and women to the bench than all previous presidents combined. He was the first President to embrace the concept of bringing racial diversity to the federal bench.

When The Carter Center began leading the international campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease in 1986, there were an estimated 3.5 million cases in at least 21 countries in Africa and Asia. Today, that number has been reduced by more than 99.99%. In 2024 so far there have been 7 cases

Carter never took a cent personally for a speaking engagement post his Presidency. Compare & contrast, as they say.

No 5, Donald Sutherland, I remember that scene sending shudders down my spine when I first saw the film. Great choice.

I hadn't heard that Tony Soper, co-founder of the BBC Natural History Unit in 1957, died in September at the age of 95. As a child, I avidly watched BBC wildlife programmes, such as Look, which he presented.

It was on here I recall - several of us remarked on his age & longevity having remembered him too (and not appreciated how influential he'd been, thinking him just a presenter)

Paddy Hill, one of the Birmingham 6, aged 80.

Read his book a few years ago. Still not convinced the State has moved on much....

Sadly, no hope for Free Speech, which has been on palliative care for a number of years.
