New to this, but need to sort myself out.

At 52 I've always been pretty fit: BMX, gym, lots of trail building and now MTB...but lockdowns got me into comfort eating and drinking, so my weight has yo-yoed over the past few years from 68-80kgs. At 173cm I find myself feeling physically uncomfortable and unhappy with the way I look.

Hopefully this thread will help me focus some attention on re-establishing my exercise regime and keeping my BP at reasonable levels.

Will update the Wiki later, post weigh in...cheers all smile

Will be in in this from Tuesday next week, why Tuesday, well it's my 50th on Sunday and we are away this weekend and I know the weekend involves fine food and alcohol!

I do tend to start these and tail off after a few months, however I'm soon to be 50, I do keep active and my diet is good, my downfall is I like drink and yes I know I drink too much, I have high blood pressure which does run in the family., so dropping the weight will help with my BP.

Over the Christmas period I've put on a few kilos onto a too high weight, I tend to hover around 102, I got down to 96 a few years ago with a goal of 90 but it crept back on when I got to 96.

So Tuesday morning I'll get going proper, will cut the booze for the rest of the month and see what happens.

Good luck everyone.

I’m in! I weighed in this morning at 17st 12lb/113.7kg and I don’t like being this weight! I’m 41 and 6’3.

Target weight is 16st/ 101.6kg, plan is to keep it simple. Stop drinking as that’s got silly, religiously hit 10k daily steps and practice intermittent fasting which I have enjoyed before, that and use my fitness pal.

I really need to start thinking in kg rather than st/lbs for body weight!

Yeah - I'm in on this!

Heaviest I've ever been right now @116kg - need to shed 15% as a bare minimum to get back down to under 100kg.... 90kg might be a stretch - which would still leave me technically obese.....

https://www.nhs.uk/health-assessment-tools/calcula...

Note that i'm currenly the heaviest on the Wiki biggrin hopefully wont be winning that one for too long.... hehe
Added myself so you are no longer the heaviest wink.

I'm back...hopefully for longer.

I have a terrible relationship with food. It's my go to for everything. Stressed? Eat. Good day at work? Eat. Tired? Take away. Good day? Treat myself to a take away.

I've always been big. It helps that I'm 194cm so carry it well to a degree.

I've been going to the gym pretty much twice a week since February, and my strength has increased massively.

Chest press machine is 100kg, chest fly machine is 105kg, lat pull down is 93kg. Tricep pull downs are 45kg.

I think I've put my target at 120kg or 125kg. That's just to start.

I've been put on blood pressure tablets as well. Not good at 35. I was 165/100 at a medical at work. Tablets have helped massively but I don't want to stay on them. Everything else seems to be alright though. Blood tests came back good. ECG came back OK.

Doctors have referred me to the wellbeing team to see what support they can give me...just about to send them a very honest email about my life...

I'm looking at moving departments at work as well. Eight hour shifts rather than ten hours so I'll have more energy to go to the gym before/after work.

Yikes! Perhaps I need to switch the other way. I'm the same height, slightly heavier (a chunk older) and just had to check you'd got the numbers right - to realise I'm only loose change under 18 stone is a kick up the bum!

It was reduce sugar in 2023, reduce sugar in 2024 and will be the same this year.

Need to stop rewarding myself and replacing booze with sugary treats.

Hi all,

do you have recommendation for tracking body composition - body fat vs muscle mass?

I have renpho which is ridiculously simple to track bmi weight over time, however, I dont trust muscle %.
Reason is that renpho reduced muscle mass in line with weight - in reality i can lift more than one year ago in pretty much all exercises. Thus I dont think correct.

Please assist, thank you.

Btw I am impressed you can lose weight by just winging it. Is no one else trying to track calories apart from me?

I use MFP as does my other half. It works for her. It doesn't work for me sadly. I just don't log when I do my binges.

Do you sync with fitbit to compare burned calories/ calories in or do you track your expenditure in mfp as well?

Nope, I just focus on eating 3 times a day and if I am hungry in between then I eat fruit. Not a diet at all as diets aren’t sustainable for me so mine is about eating sensibly and doing more exercise.

I’m not too sure if I’m doing something wrong but I managed to get added into the wiki but not there now? I think Losinggrip was too but not now?

I tried both methods before. Struggled with actively tracking the calories because I either didn't log stuff or obsessed completely over it.

'Winging it' for me means not buying snacks and only eating when I'm hungry, not when I'm just bored. As soon as I start sneaking the biscuits back in, it's all over!

ETA: Wiki fixed.

When you do your entry, please refresh the page before starting, and then click preview to check it looks good.

Looks like Blue_star edited from an old version - or others had entered their details by the time they saved theirs. There is an edit history, but it's not formatted. I'll fix it - but will need a wee while. No edits for now please.

That’s odd 22 as when I went to edit it earlier it said to me “you can’t as someone else is editing it, please wait” so it looks like it’s a shared file that has some protection.

Don't worry about it, the Wiki is there to support us. Not sure if the edit history is only available the 'OP', but it's very useful and this edit only took 2 minutes as I just used a recent version and added a couple of folk.

As for winging it - some of us have a lot more to lose than others. I can lose a decent chunk of weight with small changes to diet & movement. Around 101/102kg (which is a couple of months away), it's starts to get much tougher and I tend to fall off the wagon rather than level up my approach. Maybe this year will be different.

Checking in as a latecomer to the 2024 thread albeit successfully.

But… I still had >5<10kg to lose, easy. Then Christmas happened, as it happens to us all. So I’ve got to get back on the wagon.

Intermittent fasting starts tomorrow, but we aren’t going mad from day 1.

Back to the Fast 800 diet from Saturday to start losing the excess.

This year, focus is to get going doing callisthenics and weights. I can’t honestly be at all arsed but know I need to, so this year it’s more about strength and fitness and less about weight loss.

I think if someone has an open edit - but takes a while (and I've done it) then others can also open the same file. The only time I've ever seen the 'someone else' message is when I edit then try and go back in straight away.
