I’m never very confident for England’s chances in most tournaments but other than Belgium and maybe the Frogs, I really do think we have a chance with the young lads who have come through seem to play with no fear (probably a reflection from playing day in day out with some of the best in the world). My only concern is not having the capability to ‘stop’ the other good teams playing.

Ah those world #1 ranked dark horses
True, but I've never had much faith in the FIFA rankings, and Belgium don't have a great history in major tournament finals. Bookies have them as third favourites last time I looked.

Very much looking forward to this tournament. You can play about with predictions here, I get hopelessly optimistic at this stage but any opponent in the last 16 will be tough for England. I think they will draw 2 and win 1 in the group stage, Croatia will win all three, Scotland will lose all three and the Croatia/Czech result will be crucial. So Croatia finish on 9, England on 5, Czech on 4, Scotland on 0...

Lots of rumours that TAA isn’t in the final squad. If he’s not then Southgate should be sacked on the spot imo. He’s not had his best season but he offers so much to the team.

Does that mean James, Walker and Trippier go instead?

I would think he wants to play 3-5-2 and they can all play wing back. TAA is fantastic going forward but not a wing back.

Hol up, you're saying TAA isn't a wing back?...

I see TAA as more of a wing back than a traditional full back to be honest. I'd love to say a back three of Walker, Stones & Maguire with wing backs of Trent and Chilwell.

More the case that he doesn't play that position today, and Liverpool have never played with wing backs.

England Squad Announced. Southgate seems to have bottled it and taking 4 right backs.

Nice to see that balance in the side. laugh

Yep, 10 defenders, an injured player, a player returning from injury & at least two out of form forwards.

Same old.

I would have taken Watkins ahead of Calvert-Lewin and Ward-Prowse ahead of Phillips, the rest is probably much of a muchness.

Nine of England's twelve goals at WC2018 came from set pieces so we leave the best set-piece taker in the Premier League at home. And can't wait to see him pick the woeful Sterling against Croatia.

And WTF is Lingard playing tomorrow night v Austria when he's not in the squad? We should be nailing down the starting XI now, not playing unwanted players.

Anyhoo... v Croatia, I think he will go for

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire
Trent Rice Henderson Shaw
Foden Kane Sterling

I would have picked....

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire
Trent Rice Bellingham Chilwell
Foden Kane Grealish

Of course you don’t want to try formations, players in different positions. Just want to give players not going a run out for sts and giggles. FFS

For Croatia, I'd go:

Pickford
Walker Maguire Stones Shaw
Rice Grealish
Sancho Mount Foden
Kane

Possibly Hendo for Grealish if fit. So many possible combinations midfield and forwards... be interesting who he goes for.

Assuming everyone is fit, my starting eleven for Croatia would be:
D Henderson
TAA, Maguire (Coady if Maguire is unfit), Stones, Shaw
J Henderson, Rice
Grealish, Mount, Foden
Kane

I think it's a mistake excluding James Ward-Prowse, and I'd have him instead of Phillips. who I don't rate in an England shirt.
I am looking forward to seeing whether Bellingham, Saka or Sancho get a look in - very exciting young players.

Indeed.

I know Rashford is not exactly firing on all cylinders at the moment to put it mildly but when was the last time Sterling consistently put the goals in?

Think that's what I'd go with too.

Trent can pass a ball better than most of our midfielders.
