It was never a pen but, if we look at the context of the game rationally, England did deserve to win.
There's no doubt about that. It would have been an injustice if Netherlands had held out for a boring draw, and won on penalties. There was only one team trying to win the game.Honourable Dead Snark said:
I remember when Spain won the Euros in 2008 and World Cup in 2010, Nadal also won Wimbledon both those years securing a Spanish Double.
Alcaraz is in the final defending his title. Not a good omen for England…
He'll have finished the tennis before the footy starts. Start panicking if he wins .Alcaraz is in the final defending his title. Not a good omen for England…

Thoughts on the tournament as a whole? Right team won, but I don't think exactly been a classic overall.
A few bright sparks from some of the smaller teams but general standard of the tournament was poor. England played like crap all tournament and managed to make it to final. Tells you all you really need to know.

Totally agree. That England were in the final with the dross they’ve served up shows how poor it was. Spain were a level above everyone and their win is well deserved.

Crap football is what you see on Sunday mornings in the park. Euro teams were not crap, quite the opposite, they cancelled each other out. But they weren't 'crap'.England played like crap all tournament and managed to make it to final. Tells you all you really need to know.

The problem is park football can be entertaining. I’m not convinced that the Euros were entertaining. If it’s not entertaining then it will eventually lose interest from the supporters it needs. Admittedly that will take a long time, but it’s still a competition paraded as the best of European nations that didn’t really deliver much of interest. Sideways & backwards possession based football may well deliver more victories than defeats and mathematically work, but I don’t want to watch chess. YMMV.

It was a pretty poor tournament. The only team who looked like they wanted to win it did, scoring an average of 2.15 goals per game. With the chances they had last night they should have spanked us by 3 or 4.The final really should have been Germany v Spain for the best football, but due to the draw they obviously met too early in the tournament for that to be the case.

Very poor tournament overall for me. Only stand-out game that I watched was Turkey vs Austria, which was a fantastic match - one of the most entertaining games I've seen for ages. Germany vs Spain (semi) was decent, the rest utterly forgettable.
Next WC's going to be even worse as there are 48 teams competing (12 groups) & it's massively spread out across the USA, Canada & Mexico.

It used to be possible to follow them for a whole season, but now the cost and the geographic spread is for the super-rich only.
Picking one F1 GP to visit is one thing, but you may need £25,000 per person to follow your team in the next WC (and the Euros are going the same way).

The way defenders make a high line reduces the pitch size (well, the area of actual play in mean) so allowing forward players to stretch the pitch out a bit might have the same effect as increasing the pitch size.
