Battery charging.....

if a battery is completely dead or the voltage is below a certain point then it will not pass current to the battery, its as been said previously a safety feature. Will stop you connecting to a battery the wrong way round if its dead.

A battery has to have some voltage, and the charger connecting to it will have a voltage higher than the battery, This will cause a current to flow, This current being the charging current. As long as the charging current flows this will charge the battery. the battery will keep taking a current until the battery gets close to matching the voltage of the charger, reason your charger is around 14v and not 12v. same as your car alternator when the engine is running puts out 13.8v if its a higher voltage than the battery it will deliver current to the battery and supply all the other electrical items in the car. Just basic electrical systems really.

You did the right thing connecting to jump the battery off of a known battery to get the voltage up, once it was high enough it was at a level that would allow your charger to see the battery and then activate. Hope your battery turns out fine.
