Having just got my first decent car, Mazda 6 2.2d sport 2014 I'd like to get in to tuning a re-mapping as a hobby.
Coming from a strong IT background I'm confident the technical learning curve won't be too difficult but I'm having trouble knowing exactly what I need to get hold of to start me off.

I intend to use my Windows laptop along with a 16-pin OBD2 to USB cable along with a copy of WOW! Wurth diagnostic software but I'm not sure if this is enough to properly get to grips with my Mazda especially when I see things such as £150+ OBD2 cables which makes me question if my £10 one off eBay is any good?

Do these expensive OBD2 cables come with a built-in chip containing it's own software that can be superseded with your own laptop software such as WOW! wurth, Autocom, Delphi, ect? or are these expensive OBD2 cables required to bypass the ECU's security that these cheap £10 cables cannot do?

Finally, what if any specific Mazda software for a Windows laptop is recommended to perform remaps, ECU flashes, DPF deletes, ect?

Do you understand how your engine works? Thing's injector timing, pre-ignition, detonation etc? if you look at aftermarket ecu's there will be links to show what the software looks like in action. That may be helpful if you don't already know.

This is the easiest way.
However, have a care. It's all fine when the car is running correctly, and the map is good, and it can be done through the OBD port. Remove any of those 3 things and it becomes increasingly complex, especially with a car that has hidden issues.

I'm an Auto sparks, and have remapped loads of cars. In the last few years, we've tended to shy away from it - there's very little money in it, and we've had a few bad experiences with older stuff that has not mapped well. In one case, we ended up replacing the ECU as the map was bad. (Come to think of it, have done this on a few occasions).
