I think a lot depends on what you intend to use it for. Sprinters do suffer from horrendous corrosion issues and parts can be expensive.

For carrying tools and windscreens (and car glass related parts/equipment) the Nissan Primastar - s/a Renault Trafic and Vauxhall Vivaro - has been excellent.

Drove a 60 plate Iveco Luton yesterday what a pile of utter utter poo!
less than 60000 miles and the gear linkage is a game of what gear will I get this time
driving position is very cramped for a taller driver
seats have no support
very basic spec ,no cruise control, only 5 speed box, no controls on steering wheel,

My company van is a 59-plate Sprinter. So much better than the generation of Transit you're coming from as that's what I used in the weeks prior to this. Still prefer it to the 09 we have on fleet.

The 57-plate 311 Curtainsider has had a few issues; half-shafts & diff, gearbox linkages, clutches, goes through bulbs like nobody's business, but it's led a very hard 180,000mi.

Mine's taken a few knocks in the 49k before I 'got' it, so has a few surface rust areas, generally they're good to go, but scuff the paint and there's your protection gone. Mine is a 313, vastly superior engine to the 311. None of them are particularly frugal though, high teens and low 20s being the norm, but we are always running to capacity with palletised freight in s very hilly area doing lots of stop-start work. I worked my last tank out from pure curiosity, 26mpg. Apparently 34 is more the norm from a Transit.

Be wary of spec, 09-on got trivial things like a high level brake light and revised interior trims/new window switches, but then 2010 got lots of stuff standard, Bluetooth, double-din radio, cruise and electric mirrors. All mine has is electric windows and the standard remote locking.

Gearbox should be pretty light and smooth, but don't be alarmed by a slightly flaky/patchy steering wheel rim, they all do that.
