I decided to go camping this year with the girlfriend after a few years off and treat myself to a 4 man tent you can stand up in. Pretty luxury especially as I do a bit of wild camping. Then I joined a few new facebook groups. It appears my luxury camping is still wild camping, who the fk takes a toaster camping . Full size fridges and freezers, a sofa, wardrobes, shoe racks, George foreman grills. I couldn't be bothered packing and unpacking all that. Many posts first time camping to so I expect they have spent there 2 or 3k+ holiday fund on camping gear. Suspect be a few large tents on ebay next year when foreign travel opens back up.

What type of camper are you lot.

I started camping several years ago with some pretty basic stuff but have accumulated more stuff over the years.
These days I camp at campsites, usually with an electric hookup but I keep my electrical stuff to a minimum. I have a camping fridge but I still have an old whistling kettle for gas camping stoves.

I still manage to pack all my stuff into a Golf with a roof box.

A 5 man tent for 3 people.

I was once camping in wonderful Masham, North Yorkshire on this site which I'd recommend and someone near us unloaded a relatively large flatscreen TV and set it up in their tent. And proceeded to spend most of the time there watching (if memory serves) the Jurassic Park films...

There's always shedloads of tents on Gumtree, especially in spring & autumn.

We bought a fairly large tent last year so we could have a relatively comfortable camping trip in Cornwall - no hook up, but my wife also bought flat packed table, bin tidy, shoe tidy, shelving for the cooker.... The car was creaking, and it took a good hour just to put everything into the tent.

By contrast we've just came back from a long weekend in West Wales using a 4 man tent for the 4 of us. I gave in and took some chairs, but other than that it was jetboil for coffee and a small pan and lightweight cooker for bacon sandwiches. It must have taken us less than half hour to get the tent up, kit sorted, and off to the beach. And at no point did anyone wish they had any extra kit...

I only take what i need the basics essentially.

But if the Mrs comes the car and roofbox are rammed with stuff and we have to have electric or she isn't going.
Oil filled radiator fridge everything but the telly.

I needed a plastic tent so spent 19k on a basecamp 2 caravan

I have a job in Cornwall for a few days and have managed to get a space on a no frills campsite.

Bought a pop up 2 man tent from Decathlon and the tiny stove thing that you pop onto a little gas canister.

I'll take my mocha pot and a mug plus a saucepan to have soup or noodles.

My old sleeping bag and a single duvet in case temp drops and as I'm old a canvas campbed and a folding stool.

I must bring my pillow

The stuff that'll take up room in the car will be walking gear, paddle board and wetsuit plus boogie board. Plan to have a few hours of time out.

Nice tent for us. Pup tent for the boy. No electric, no air beds. Gas burner and a portable bbq. Cool bag with chilled food for day 1, frozen food for day 2. We’ll have found a shop by then.

Booze.

Inflatable sofa if there’s room.

If going to goodwood and load split across multiple cars, duck pond and picket fence.

Camping solo I can easily fit everything I need for 2 weeks on my motorbike (2 man tent, self inflating mattress, petrol stove, fold up chair, etc)

A weekend camping with the Mrs easily fills the boot of my Octavia (4 man tent, double airbed, duvet, chairs, table...)

To be fair we have both camped on a similar setup to my solo camping, but if we're taking the car with space in the boot it seems to get filled up.



A friend of ours even used to take an electric blanket for use in the tent, but has now upgraded to a camper van.

My neighbours went camping last week. They took a pathfinder full with backseats down of stuff plus a trailer attached to that then a merc gle to carry the kids in. All for a family of 4. There wasn’t much they didn’t have!

I'm two types: I have an Alpkit aeronaught for wild camping/bike packing and carry the absolute bare essentials on the bike. Also bought a decathlon fresh'n'black four man inflatable the other year for mtb weekends away and take an airbed, camping bbq/coolbox etc (not full sofa and fridge freezer, but a little bit more comfortable!)

I do prefer the absolute basics/making a dinner/coffee on a tiny stove style of camping without all the excess though!

We do usually take at least one proper fridge, paddling pool and a TV/sat to Le Mans every year but that's a necessity!


There is a point where camping becomes carrying as many home comforts with you to a field as possible which sort of defeats the object a bit...

We've got a decent sized 6 man tent i think it is with large lounge area.

But unless we're going at either end of the season we don't bother with hook up. And if we do it's usually just for the heater for the kids really.

Other than that sleeping bags, sims, and a couple of camping chairs.

In fairness that'd be my idea of camping these days - so rather than go through all the agg. (and cost!!) of un/packing everything I'll just grab a hotel with (most importantly imo) no shared showers or toilets.

We used to go round Europe for two weeks with small 2 seaters (Mk1 MR2, vx220 and smart roadster). 3 man tent, small stools, single burner camping stove, sleeping bags and a couple of holdalls. Always came back with 20 bottles of vino.

Nowadays (with 2 kids) we have our T25 camper, 4 man tent, fridge, twin camping stove and grill, blow up sofa, desk chairs, sideboard, table, airbeds etc. Etc.

Times change.....
