As I recall, my RV was classed by DVLA as a PLG and although I have C1, D1, C1E and D1E licence, I'm sure the selling dealer (I bought mine new) told me it could be driven on a 'normal' B car licence, despite it weighing of over 8 Tons. You'll have to check this for yourself though.
Yes, grey area on that might have been cleared up.

As far as I know license are now categorised as weight only but I cant say it with authority.

Personally I wouldn’t (and didn’t) risk it, the last thing you need is to have a prang and end up arguing the toss with the police and your insurance company.

Things like motorway speed limits seem to be a bit clearer as they’re defined by vehicle category rather than weight, theoretically as a Motorhome then 70mph and outside lane are legal. Again, don’t much fancy it myself but YMMV hehe
It wouldn't surprise me if this grey are has now been cleared up. It's been 10+ years since I owned mine. I do have C1, D1, C1E and D1E licence though so maybe that was ok back then?

My RV had a single, large, slideout in the living area which made it much more useable but still cosy.

I can't understand the comments about being difficult to drive. Ok, in the UK, LHD presents a few challenges and yes, most of my driving was done in Europe but they're no more difficult to drive than a coach and you see them everywhere.

Back to the OP's original question. Try searching for American C Class hire. I think you might be in with a chance of hiring and driving one of those. In the USA of course, hiring any RV will be easy(ish).

Normally it’s fine but things like narrow lanes through busy roadworks on the motorway (of which we have a lot) can get quite windy, especially in the dark when it’s hard to pick out the lanes.

Put it this way I don’t have any issue driving a full size artic in the same situation.
