Trying to remember a book from childhood

A really long shot, but I'm sure someone might be able to help.
Many years ago - probably getting on for 45 - 50 years I remember reading a children's fiction book that I've been trying to find with no success.
It was called something like "The Blue Transistor" or maybe "The Red Transistor" - it was about a young boy who buys a mail order transistor radio kit and the last transistor is a different colour than in the instructions. When he puts it in the radio he picks up a message from an alternative reality and is transported to an alternate reality where he has to help a group fighting against an invading force.
Any ideas?
