I am surprised they those Azerbaijan or did they have no choice? Can anyone remember how the picking process goes?

Not terribly fussed about Monaco not being live, the real issue is that there is still doubt about the Azerbaijan race isnt there? SO they could lose one of the live races

Azerbaijan or Le Mans (start of Le Mans v Quali, finish of le Mans v race) - not a great one for C4 to have, or Sky for that matter!

Channel 4 get the first three picks for their live races, then Sky choose the next three. Then Channel 4 pick another three and then it's Sky's turn, and so on until all the races are picked. Channel 4 cannot have more than two consecutive races live, and Sky cannot have more than two consecutive races as exclusively live.

Last year the BBC had three consecutive live races, but that was caused by the cancellation of the German Grand Prix, and it was then too late to change the picked races.

The vast majority of their audience won't be so very interested in Le Mans I would suggest

thanks, I thought I had missed something about it being dropped!

Canada is one of the few GP's left that I would actually miss.

How many Brits attend Le Mans? I suspect that every single one of them is a Formula 1 viewer, and many probably have the Sky F1 channel.

In fact most of those attending Le Mans probably are F1 viewers so the impact will be a significant number of people but not as a noticeable number the way F1 count their viewers!

I cant see Jake going back to F1, even if it's his own company doing the F1 coverage for C4. He made it clear the reasons why he left F1 in favour of football & a lucrative contract with BT Sport and he seems happy doing what he's doing.

Same for Lee - hasn't she already tweeted (or similar) that she is otherwise contracted to the BBC this year for various sports including athletics, horse trials (I think she did Olympia last year) and the Olympics?
And she was involved in the 6 Nations Rugby over the weekend smile

250,000 spectators at Le Mans - over a world wide TV figure of 425,000,000 - I cant find a europe wide figure - but would 100,000,000 of those be a fair estimate? That's a quarter of 1% of the total.

An estimated 50,000 of those spectators are Brits. BBC reported peak figures of 5,000,000. Shall we assume that Channel 4 will get the same. That's 1%. That figure will sink to way below 1% when you take sky figures into account.

On both counts, I would say from a commercial point of view those are statistically unimportant. And very, very far from a commercial fk up.

For the VAST majority of F1 TV watchers, there is no other motor sport, except MAYBE touring cars. I am sorry - i think my point stands. Just because the vast majority of Le Mans viewers will watch F1 - It does not correlate that the vast majority of F1 watchers give a fk about Le Mans (as offensive as we may find that as motor racing fans) - in fact all available actual evidence points to the fact the vast majority will favour F1.

Be careful with statistics, particularly those provided by Bernie Ecclestone for F1 TV audiences. Ignoring even that, you do need to reflect that you are comparing audiences live at an event vs TV - the alternative could be to say that there are 100k people watch the British GP against 250k watching Le Mans live, therefore giving a much larger number of people wanting to see WEC. Although maybe it is only 50% who want to watch as 100k Brits watch the British GP live but only 50k watch Le Mans live.........

At the end of the day, I accept readily that F1 is more popular but that is largely down to the restrictive practices imposed by Ecclestone for those who want to be involved in F1 meaning that Le Mans/WEC gets much less exposure. The deliberate clash of Baku with Le Mans is evidence of this following the discussion about Le Mans on F1 programmes last year after Hulkenberg won - I'll bet Bernie didn't like that!

The worldwide figures quoted in your first post are potentially not viewers as you might mean them, especially if they are the figures produced by F1 themselves. Broadly speaking in their counting terms you are a viewer if you watch coverage for x minutes. Therefore you and I will count as several viewers over the course of a single race! Or at least thats my undestanding of the counting.

I would prefer to use the figures on this site http://f1broadcasting.co/category/bbc-f1/page/2/ as they are based on average figures. The UK F1 race is probably not a good race to use as it gets extra publicity etc, but the average UK viewing figures for a race on the BBC was 3.1 million so the numbers attending Le Mans are nearer 2%

Yes its not a big number but it is countable and the TV companies would almost certainly prefer for them to be watching F1 on TV not live racing in France!

Eddie Jordan is a bit "marmite", I will miss him , and thought his outburst in the Forum after the last race in 2015 was priceless. . . . but, I can understand why some may not warm to him.

Very very sad to lose Lee though, and subscribe to previous posters opinions on Suzy P's disappearance.

Edited to say, it is of course only an assumption that EJ won't be involved. In recent years he has cherry-picked which races he attended, and I don't see why, as a kind of "freelancer", he couldn't do both.

When various names were thrown in the Top Gear hat the appointment of one automatically excluded the other in many folks eyes, but, hey, they went & hired the lot of them.

Love him or loath him, EJ had his finger on the pulse & most of his "scoops" came to fruition. As an ex team Boss he had respect/status that allowed him access to people who may have shunned other reporters.

For the same reasons as having ex Drivers in the team, I believe he brought credibility that helped counter the daft Biker woman that embarrassed herself every time she did an interview at the start of her tenure there.

From Channel 4 on Twitter:

F1 has a new home but some things just have to remain: we're chuffed to announce that The Chain by Fleetwood Mac will be our title music.

IMHO thats a good decision by C4.
