Spoiler alert -------------- Bottas won his first GP at the last race in Russia.

This got me thinking......

Anyone in a car with a reasonable chance of winning has already won a race so:

- who will be F1's next first time winner?

It was almost a year since the last first time winner (spoiler alert - Max won the 2016 GP in Spain)...so:

- what has been the longest gap between first time winners?

- and what's the shortest gap, or, since this is probably 1 race, what's the most consecutive races to have first time winners?

All six seats in the three teams which have been able to compete for wins over the past several seasons are now occupied by race winners.

I reckon the next first time F1 race winner must therefore be the driver who replaces Raikkonen at Ferrari or the driver who partners Alonso in the works Renault team... so Perez? Grosjean? Hulkenberg? Saintz?

Probably Carlos TBH

Most of the top teams are full of winners. If Renault can get things together there'd maybe be a chance for Hulk- he already has a pole IIRC.

Short of that I don't know. Perez has driven well on many occasions, has he won a race yet?

Seems unlikely so long as the top teams dominate. Maybe if Danny goes somewhere Sainz will get his shot in a decent car and make the mist of it.

Just read the last post ,I was going to put forward Monaco as a potential left field winner as strange things can occur

on the streets of the principality.

Normally I'd agree, but this year it would take both Ferrari's, Both Mercedes and both Red Bulls to DNF/have a nightmare. That would be getting on for Monaco '96 levels of bad luck (where Panis scored his first and only race win for Ligier!)

Incidentally, I feel old. I was a huge Hill fan and watched this live:

Pastor Maldonado won the 2012 Spanish GP...

With the current reliability of the cars I can't see anyone outwith Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull winning anytime soon.

Long gaps between first time winners, best I can come up with is around 3 years:

Berger - Mexico (race 5) 1986
Boutsen - Canada (race 6) 1989

Naninni - Japan (race 15) 1989
Schumacher - Belgium (race 12) 1992

Webber - Germany (race 9) 2009
Rosberg - China (race 3) 2012

I'd put 1992 - 1995 also in your list above. 1982 -1995 seems to be the scarcest period of 1st time winners.
You missed off Damon.

Interesting that The first year with no debut winner was 1954. The next was 1983. It's only after then the gaps seem to expand.

Mortality rates and poor reliability leaving fresh opportunities? Jim Clark often either won or broke down.

Looking through my list, if Bottas were to win the WDC this year, he would join a group of four drivers in history (excluding Farina) to achieve their first race win and WDC in the same year.

The drivers are: Jack Brabham (1959); Graham Hill (1962); Denny Hulme (1967) and Keke Rosberg (1982).

How many do you have in total? Bottas was the 107th different winner since the start of the World Drivers Championship.

Next first time winner will be either Hulkenberg or Charles Leclerc I reckon.
