I'm going to sound awful, but I find it hard to get excited about McLaren these days. They were 'my' team when I got into F1, then the golden period I remember from my 20s with Hakkinen battling Schumacher. The team felt from the outside like the personifications of Ron.
Now, to me at least, it feels like it has no soul or identity or connection to the thing I remember.
I don't wish them to do badly, but I wouldn't view their future success as being connected with their past any more than I would Aston Martin winning next year and connecting it with Jordon.

So don’t visit the F1 subforum
I know, I know! But it popped up under My Stuff on my phone which doesn't show the sub forum and I thought it was the road cars. At least all I know is that McLaren got a fair number of points more than Racing Point. I'm switching off now!

I’ve stayed away from all social media and news sources all day to watch the highlights. All it needs is some self control that CanAm obviously does not possess

Crikey. Ron Dennis era having soul? He was the guy who insisted all the offices at Woking were painted grey! That era, to me - throughout the Dennis years, which I grew up with - the team were cold and clinical. Even when Senna drove for McLaren I could never root for them. Now, to me at least, it feels like it has no soul or identity or connection to the thing I remember.

The current team is very different from that I'll grant you - it seems a far warmer place, and the "bromance" between Norris and Sainz (and Norris and anyone else in F1 for that matter) has made it a much more likeable, relatable team. I can't imagine them employing guys like Norris and Danny Ric in Dennis's years, he would've had a heart attack with that sort of public image...

The bromance years not so.
Ron brought a professionalism to the sport which has been widely copied by other teams. The Mercedes years are like a softer version of Ron’s vision.
No one is perfect but Ron contributed greatly to the modern F1.
The Ferrari passion is lovely but with the exception of the Schumacher years (mainly outsiders running the show) they haven’t been overly successful. The glory years are well and truly behind them.

You mean the team achieved more between 1981 and 2016 than it did in 2019 and 2020? You don't say... The bromance years not so.
