George is a racing driver.

Bottas is little more than a test driver who was managed by Toto. The 1 year contracts are kinda cute hehe

Lewis keeps saying he wants close racing, George is the solution to that.

Indeed. But

a) It's not up to Lewis

b) This is a business. In business, you don't rock the boat unnecessarily.

Team has won world championship
Lead driver has won world championship
Second driver has (will) come second in championship.

If you're a team manager, why change anything?

The time for change will come when Lewis needs replacing. I suspect that change will come in 2022 and George will come in for a Hamilton retirement in 2023/2024.

I think we all know the situation.

Having two top drivers doesn’t always win WDC/WCC. They fight.

What works is having the best driver and someone not too far behind who will drive cleanly and pick up the rest of the points and a few wins.

Bottas is the perfect choice.
Mercedes chose very well.

Soon George is coming and Lewis will hang up his boots.

If the hand over goes well, Max might never get his opportunity which is sad but F1 is much more than being fast.

It's sport. Each driver should be fighting for the championship.
Mercedes have bagged every championship even when Lewis was fighting Rosberg.

There are dozens of existing threads where trolls can hate on Hamilton. Why this particular one chose to create a new thread is beyond me.
Anyone regular around here will see this thread for what it is - a thinly disguised dig at Lewis Hamilton.
Please don’t feed the troll any further.

Wrong.
This is a thread about why Toto should replace Bottas with George.

Or do you believe that Bottas should have a job for life ?

Toto will absolutely replace Bottas with George but not until 2022.

When Lewis retires, they might bring Bottas back to partner George.

I’m sure Bottas would like to win, but he of all people will know what Lewis can do and why he will never beat him over a season. There are 9 million other reasons why he will carry on.

I know I shouldn't feed it but oh come on, there is this thread for a start: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... which will cover this and more, and the Lewis Hamilton thread, and the Silly Season thread. Oh and the Sakhir thread where this is being discussed.

Having a 'tease' thread title was the icing on the cake.

It is also supposed to be a showcase for the industry, having a dominate team and one lead driver year after year is in my view not great for the sport or business in my view.

Used to be highlight on BBC now it is on Channel 4 sometime interrupted by adverts

Last comment: rolleyes Grow up or move on.

The first paragraph contradicts itself. It is a showcase for industry, in this case the Merc team are showing what the motorsport industry can do given proper organisation BY having a dominant team and one lead driver year after year. They are showcasing the best way for industry to win F1 championships.

I think that having 2 top drivers doesn't necessarily win the WDC/WCC if the other teams are miles behind like this year. Mercedes can handle Bottas's recent run of poor results because they are just so far ahead. In 2022, they may end up in the situation where they really need the 2nd driver to deliver results just behind their 1st driver so it kinda makes sense to have someone who will deliver those results.

I know yesterday was a one-off race and I'd be very, very surprised if Bottas' P45 was in the mail because of it. As much as I'd like to see an all-Brit lineup at MB, I think Hamilton/Bottas makes sense for 2021.

Then the other teams need to do better, don't they? I'd love to see the teams closer together, but if performance is leveled by artificial means it ceases to be meaningful advertising for anyone.

As for Bottas, I think he's probably around the middle of the grid in terms of pure talent but by and large he does exactly what Mercedes want him to do so he's the perfect driver for that car.

Interestingly enough, I think if the swap will have happen at the begining of the year, Bottas will have completely outshine Russel.

If you look at Bottas the last few races (or since he knew he couldn't win the championship), he completely gave up. His qualification lap was very poor and still ahead of Russel. He basically race to finish the season, that is about it. Russel is fantastic but going against Hamilton could be soul destroying for a young driver, happened to most of the drivers who went against him. Verstapen knew it and was wise to refuse the seat in 2017.

If I remember rightly, Hamilton wants to quit F1 when he loose the championship, not as the world champion. 2022 could be Ham-Russ at Mercs and hopefully for the haters, Hamilton should have lost that racing edge which goes with age sadly and celebrate Russel as the new champion.

Still, a bad 2021 for Hamilton is not impossible.

That's a good link, particularly the bit where a Dutch racing driver explains why Bottas's team mate is a 7 time world champion; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJCb3QeWv1Y&fe...
