Just to keep the discussion seperate from the general weekend woffle, and keeping it on the factual side rather than which tribe we like - What specifically is the problem?

The pants I get - probably won't make a blind bit of actual difference but on the logic that once you allow standards to slip a bit where does it stop, okay.

But nose/ear rings? I hear the potential to need an MRI but most rare metals pose no risk and this can be checked quite easily?

If you'll permit me the indulgence of comparing my humdrum existence with that of F1 driverslaugh I used to get it a bit in my industry, that due to electrical conductivity I shouldn't have nose or ear piercings. My slant on it is that if the nasty voltages are within 10mm of my stinking face and closing I've utterly failed on so many levels I'm not sure it's going to make as lot of difference at this point and probably don't deserve to be a sparks any more anyway. Strikes me more a vehicle for old curmudgeons trying to inflict their outdated ideas on people.

Alternatively...

It's been in the rule book a long time, and just hasn't been enforced.

After last years complaints about not following the rules, they've decided they will follow all of them.

The argument against, is just one driver trying to show he's bigger than F1.
Turns out he isn't and has had to eat humble pie when it turned out the FIA weren't bluffing.

Personally I think Vettel's protest against the underwear rule was much funnier and didn't make him look like an entitled knob

It's an old rule that has not been inforced. An argument could be that by not clamping down they risk it getting worse as more do it, but why now?

I don't think it's an anti Hamilton thing. I also don't think it's him being deliberately obtuse. Both sides spark online discussion though.

I've always thought it mad in a sport where teams are stripping layers of paint to save weight they don't ritually shave their drivers completely hairless, so from a weight perspective maybe that's the delta between Hamilton and his team mate.

For those of us (me) who steer clear of the race threads now because they are just shouty tribalism, can someone fill me in?

I'm guessing that Lewis (and maybe others) have been told body jewellery has to be removed, but Seb's kecks?

They can't wear underwear under their fireproof long John's so seb (as a joke) wore his over his race suit.

Hamilton didn't pass scrutineering due to his nose ring which he says he can't remove as the hole would quickly seal up. Apparently he has removed the earnings which don't suffer the same issue.

He's been given 2 races to sort it (as have all drivers) as a grace period. Sky (who are very prom Hamilton) have said he will likely try to have further discussion on it - which leads some to believe it's power play between the two.

Thank you.

From my experience, when I had my ear pierced, it would heal over if I left a stud out overnight. Never had a nose piercing, think they look hideous, even more so on a man. Surely Lewis can remove his nose stud when he's in the car? It's no more than two hours or so at a time? Seems a bit 'I'm bigger than F1'.

Seb showing he's far from a Prima Donna then. rofl

Didn't they just used to put a bit of tape over them, a long time ago ? Piercings, not pants BTW. If you can't get your wedding ring off in hospital that's all they do.

Jenson Button said yesterday in an interview, that he was well aware of the rules and always complied with them. You wear your certified fireproof underwear and your race suit only. No comfy cotton underpants and no metal anywhere, which can exacerbate various injuries in an accident.

The issue is that the rule applies to all FIA competitions, and the new FIA management want drivers in the top tier to set an example to those in the junior categories.

Seb and Lewis protesting in the way they did was quite funny though.

I think the issue with Hamilton's nose stud, is that he can't easily remove it.

Think it was mentioned, its been in that long, and for some reason, its not coming out like it should, maybe tissue growth has grown over some if it inside his nose.

Or that's just an excuse currently for keeping it in a power play.

Rules haven't been enforced, and after the furore at the end of last season, its all by the book now.

It's a rule that has been there for years and the drivers should have been well aware of it and chose to ignore it. Drivers all around the world who aren't paid millions to race manage to obey the rules so why do F1 drivers think they are a cut above?

Such a lame "excuse" from Hamilton. It makes him sound like a 13 year old schoolgirl trying to wear jewellery in gym class.

Well rules are rules and it was the rule before.
Still it seems like the pathetic FIA revenge for being show up as incompetent cheats last year. Masi's gone but officals close ranks on the
ruled over.
Was this the rule they reminded the drivers about while wearing no masks? Then they got covid.

I think it is vitally important that we all get out angst out there!! Particularly about that guy!! He is going to be the end of F1. What with his political stance. His slogan T-shirts. His fashion statements. His flaunting and taunting of the FIA and their enforcement of rules...

Funny how the criticism leveled at Hamilton hasn't also been directed towards Gasly, who apparently agrees with him and also wants to carry on wearing certain jewellery:

Take out the metal nose ring and replace with a plastic stud. Easy.

I have no hate for Hamilton whatsoever but I think it's a power play/the teenager rebelling in gym class as alluded to above.

As for the pants, it's a rule, always has been, so just put on the fireproof ones and get on with it.

What you mean to say is "funny the criticism in britain has been levelled at the biggest star in the sport and one of the most well known British sports stars, who has multiple piercings and failed the scrutineering rather than a lower known star in the sport who has less piercing and 99% of the British public wouldn't even know"

If the FIA were so concerned about the rules it would have been helpful if they had dealt with them properly last year instead of robbing Lewis of a WDC.

I think being fair, if you have not enforced a rule for 15 years it seems a little strange to suddenly discover it is the most important rule in the world. This seems all too much like getting revenge on Lewis for calling out their rule breaking last season and making them look even more stupid (which oddly is close to what Seb said in an interview was it not?)

Reference the pants, I’m RAF aircrew and we wear fire retardant under garments under our flying suits. RAFCAM (RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine) did some extensive testing on the effectiveness of our under garments (essentially the same as what F1 drivers will wear), if not being worn correctly (even things like wearing your own underwear under a pair of fireproof leggings) decreases the effectiveness of them by about 85% if I remember the numbers correctly.

I remember seeing the evidence, I never wore them incorrectly again. They only work if worn as part of a layered approach.

As for the Jewels then metal gets bloody hot quickly, it can only make matters worse. So as far as I’m concerned it’s only right that there mandated.

Great post, good to hear from someone with relevant experience of these things thumbup

Your tale, as expected, matches with what the FIA have said. They did their own research and testing on this stuff, and the drivers’ clothing is only certified if worn correctly. Their aim, as with the military, is to prevent injuries when accidents occur!
