Pretty strong statement from Piastri saying he will not drive for Alpine, he must be sure of his move to McLaren then. So where does this leave Alpine and Ricciardo, will he go back to Alpine (Renault) and will they want him back?

According to the paper this morning Alpine had said that Piastri was clear to speak to others as they assumed Alonso would stay.
Alpine now saying they have contract still with Piastri, so suggestion is the premature press release was deliberate to warn off other teams. Bizarre!

I don't understand why anyone would think Renault/Alpine would be happy 'tottering in the midfield'? If that were the case they'd take pay drivers, not a long-contract paid driver and (up until now) one of the highest paid drivers on the grid.

Also, the Renault V6 is far from being the worst out there now. I bet Ferrari wouldn't mind some of their reliability and the Vmax is always up there with the best.
For the umpteenth time why did McLaren not continue with Renault?

Or how about answer why Ricciardo quickly leaving Enstone for Woking when the opportunity arose?

How long did it take for Renault to build a competitive engine? Seems like Honda did it in half the time it took Renault with an acrimonious working relationship relationship with McLaren.
Probably because Merc had the best engine and that was likely to continue.

Just because a team doesn't build a competitive engine it doesn't mean they didn't try. All the engine manufacturers could spend £100 billion on a new engine, and one of them will still be uncompetitive.

I suspect Alpine are probably not throwing lots of money at it now, but there has been several times in the last few years they were trying to change things. This failing like means they've stopped trying more now.

Alpine got this one wrong lost Alonso and their favoured reserve doesn’t want to drive for them so I guess it leaves Ricciardo ?

Not necessarily. Ricciardo may not have a seat next season.
