People could argue the likes of Vettel are not as good as they used to be.

My thinking was over their career + current form; hence Vettel & Danny not making my 10. But it's naturally open to interpretation, so if your gut feel is that Lando is the best, give him a vote!

My thinking was over their career + current form; hence Vettel & Danny not making my 10. But it's naturally open to interpretation, so if your gut feel is that Lando is the best, give him a vote!

Plainly Vettel is one of the top 10 drivers, over his career, of those who are still competing in F1.

I kinda get where you are going with that statement, however for a ranking of "who's THE BEST", the history of how they've become that package fades into insignificance.

That's not intended to make a case for Max, or any other driver, to be at the top of the rankings, rather simply a reflection of who's the best right now!!

You posted up an entirely ambiguous and largely arbitrary ranking system. What did you expect to happen?

No, the poll doesn't really make much sense, but the "currently in F1" bit of the title is pretty unambiguous!

Although interestingly, the order of the top 6 is, I think, exactly what I'd have picked if I just had to pick the top six current F1 drivers and put them in order.

I very rarely start threads these days, after making an appalling error of judgment by doing a thread asking if I could live without cruise control. I had NO IDEA of the upset and wailing that was to come...

That's the point. The title is ambiguous.

Are we talking about on current form? If so, we have a WDC table that helps us with that one (plus or minus a few bits for unreliability, poor cars etc.).

Or are we talking about their career achievements? If so, we can easily rank them by wins.

Or, as is more likely the case, are we talking about some ambiguous combination of the two, with OP making up arbitrary weighting in his ranking?

Either way, putting Max behind F1 hipster fan-favourite Alonso is nonsense. Fred hasn't won a race in nearly a decade, and Max has almost matched his wins in less than half his starts.

I don't remember the situation in great detail, but I recall I started the thread and went to do my gig on the ship I was on at the time. When I got back, all hell had broken loose. There were insults aimed at me, people arguing angrily with each other... I won't be asking that question again.

Yeah - I posted something once (can't remember what) and toddled off to work ... by the time I got there I was accused of trolling because I hadn't answered a bunch of questions. Being an OP can be a full-time job

Anyway the answer to this is Fangio, de Vries, Blundell, Hakkinen, Lombardi, von Trips. Needell, Schumacher (M), Andretti (M), Merzario but I admit I haven't read the Title or any posts on the first three pages
