Trues but he/they didn’t have a well tested succession plan. Masi was the successor but I don’t recall Charlie testing him by letting him be the leader for some weekends under his watch? I’m not having a go at Charlie, but it is an issue for many senior people.
It's possible he had a proper succession plan that just didn't include him dying suddenly.

That is the part of the reason for a succession plan. Ditto sudden illness that means you can't fly, etc. Succession plans are about long term planning for foreseeable and unforeseen situations.

the succession plan should also include passing on the organisational authority that comes with the role. none of whiting's successors have had any.

jo bauer is the only official left who has the clout to make unpopular decisions [last year's USGP for example] and not attract the FIA pres's rage. That will also change when he retires, long may that be.

The plot thickens.

FIA is looking more like a soap opera than a governing body. Hopefully it’s only a matter of time before the spotlight swings to the idiot at the top.

So basically if Marques quits or gets fired then they won't be able to run the F1 or F2 races because there'll be nobody qualified left to run them.

That somewhat assumes that the FIA is an ethical governing body with principals rather than just some weird club. Accountability will only come when the whole merry-go-round gravy train is at risk of coming to a crashing halt because of actions by the President. The FIA is totally dependent on the income it gets from F1 so that is where the pressure will come from, but it will come in subtle ways because F1 doesn't want to deal with the whole European commission thing about separation of governance and commercial aspects of the sport again.

There was a plan that got a bit broken when Laurent Mekies went to Ferrari.

Then there was Scott Elkins and Michael Masi, who were both in line but sadly Charlie died before they were fully in the role.

Is there a mechanism to do it though? And by many accounts he has the next election sown up…

The FIA has always been a st show of an organisation, but under MBS it's decended to an all time low.

The bloke has always been unfit for the role.

Convene an Extraordinary General Assembly; or Khashoggi-ed. That’d be my guess.
