That's the way I saw it when the news broke.
I guess there's only a handful of people with the resources to buy such a large and expensive collection all in one go. That way Bernie gets his money now rather than waiting for TH jr to sell them individually, although quite what he's going to do with it now at his age is beyond me.
It's not about the money, it's about dealing with this now while he is still around to make things easier for his wife when he hangs his clogs up.
Hasn’t he got a large tax bill to settle…

He has the money to settle that tax bill without worry and certainly without needing to sell cars.

It's far more likely that the reason he's selling them now is for precisely the reason he's given; he wants to be in control of the process.

I just hope he does not intend to rebrand them in Red Bull colours
Why would he do that? Just because he is behind RedBull doesn't mean that he does not appreciate the F1 history.

He's said he'll care for them and display them, that's good enough for me.

I assume that wherever they're displayed will feature some Red Bull branding because they simply can't help themselves!! But that's fine too.

No way would anyone with even a slither of a brain cell pay half a billion quid for these storied historical cars and then brand them to market fizzy drinks... c'mon, that' just not going to happen.

They do it with just about everything else they own!!

Planes helicopters, might not be fully branded but you will certainly know who owns the thing

Yes, he wanted to see the collection go to a good home as a collection, rather than a post-mortem auction that would see the cars potentially go anywhere. One doesn’t need to be a fan of Red Bull Racing to see that the Matechitz family are car people, and will indeed take care of the Ecclestone collection.

They will simply be buying it as an asset to sell on later in life, these cars are pretty much priceless individually to some people. For the money it's a bargain really as I am sure they could raise far more sold solely

I always felt they'd go to an individual person - whilst the person has surprised me a little, it makes sense and I'm glad they're staying together.

We don't know how much was paid, so it's hard to say if it was a bargain or not.

I thought the amount was well over 500 million, this is what was reported I presume.

No, all that has been reported is that 'an undisclosed sum' was paid. There have been some references to the collection 'being valued' at $500m, but no information on the actual sale price has been made public.

OK for teh pedants that is fair enough, but I think most us can see through the glass and estimate what the true amount was. I dont really care as they will not see the light of day, and it all goes to make two very rich men even richer. Which is rather sad if you ask me

These cars haven't seen the light of day for a very long time. I'm pretty sure they're more likely to now they've got a new 32 year old enthusiastic owner who also happens to own 2 Formula One teams!

Eta - sorry if you were referring to the figures rather than the cars!

For the pedants that is fair enough? WTF does that mean? Either a figure is accurate or it is not. Yours was a guess, get over being wrong.

Yeah, I wasn't intending to be pedantic. Just pointing out that we simply don't know what was paid for these cars. It could have been $500m, $250m, $800m. We don't know.

I read reports saying it was about 650 million

Either way it is a lot of money no need to points score is there

There is no intention whatsoever to ‘points score’.

Where have you seen the 650 million reported?
